Bit of a mix and match selection, clearly favouring a stronger bench, which has a lot of firepower. Would like to have seen Quinn feature somewhere. Bartley by all accounts has been decent in pre-season, hence making a debut at 30, but we need some help here. Salanoa apparently nearing fitness, but no guarentees he will stay fit. I think we're looking for a signing here still.

Big season for Gleeson, I think he will be starting consistently by the end of the year.

If we keep everyone fit we actually have good depth in nearly every position (prop aside)

Any word on Edwin Edogbo?

Like the the Leinster team. Our depth at lock is again lacking outside the big 3 though. Surprised we've so many internationals back. Delighted for Sparrow.

Think he's back or thereabouts but probably not particularly fit having missed a good block of preseason.

Also just spotted Séan Cronin is taking on a scrum coach job with the senior team in addition to his academy gig.

******* Peel starting Costello at fly half. FFS. Just play Hawkins there would ya.

Not only is it bad coz Costello is starting but it also means Johnny Williams, who was probably the best 12 in Wales last season, has been put on the bench.

Leinster getting nilled by a decent score right now. Don’t see that often. They’ve gone probably as strong as they can minus the Lions but that’s a ridiculous amount of quality to make up for even for the Conveyor Belt (TM).

Ulster have been the best side in this game, but inconsistent reffing is still an issue in the league. Offload from Lowry in lead up to Ulster try in first half looked clearly forward to me, then in the second he chalks off a Dragons try for a forward pass that looked absolutely fine!

Sharks playing like a team coached by a failed kiwi coach. Going to be another long ass season.

There was another incident in the second half where he blew up for a forward pass when the dragons were through. That one kinda maybe was forward but it wasn't as clear as the forward pass in the build up to the Ulster try in the first half. The one you mentioned was absolutely fine. I honestly don't know what he is seeing. I can only assume he was on acid or something.

The sad reality for the Dragons is that despite recruiting well over the summer, they continue to be their own worst enimies. At times last night they played some OK stuff, but accuracy at key times was poor, with soft breakdown pens conceded, issues at the line out, and scrum issues once the starting props were replaced.

They also need better centres. Aneurin Owen and Westwood had promise as youngsters, but they haven't developed at all. Their defensive positioning was terrible last night, and they offer little going forwards. Dyer was very poor as well.

There was ultimately very little evidence to suggest this season will be any different from the last 20. They may pick up a few wins and improve on the very low bar set last season, but that's probably about it!
