I’m shocked WR & unions allow for such lengthy bans. I’m not sure I have ever seen an NFL player get 12 games for anything.

A player just spit on another player, something I would consider worse than gouging, and got a 1 game suspension.

I genuinely don’t know what could get you a 12 week ban in the NFL. Maybe bringing a weapon onto the field?

What planet are you living on? Spitting is disgusting but is highly unlikely to lead to a life change injury.

I’d much prefer to be spat on than have a bloke who curls 80kg or more with insane grip strength trying to gouge my eye out.

One is unpleasant, the other could be life changing (in a very bad way). I don’t even think they’re comparable.

Given Etzebeth has a bit of a record, I can see him getting a very, very long ban. Gouging is unforgivable and he deserves the punishment coming his way.

Actually, I guess that’s kinda the point with this eye gouge, you completely and utterly dominate a team today and on top of that Alex Mann is half the man Etzebeth is so why not grab his collor, have some handbags and laugh in his face. Bit mad really but I don’t think this incident should detract anything away from the game. It’s not like this has never happened before or will never happen again. Give him a ban and let the SA coaches decide if they want to carry on selecting him just like any other player.

On a side note, I wonder what his club contract says about long bans like this? If it affects him financially or if he just can't play go x amout of games.

For the record I'm not calling for anything hear I'm more curious.

Yea… tbh it’s a weird one (gonna ignore EE in the first paragraph for now). It really felt like a pointless game with no upside. If we didn’t beat this Welsh side by a cricket score, we were going to be disappointed, and even then when that is the expectation you kinda just feel fine at the end. I mean at half time I kinda just felt disappointed because it felt like we had so much dominance but we only had the 4 tries from it (yes I know… only 4 tries, but we had so much dominance and were camped in the Welsh half).

What adds to the “meh”-ness of this is how there was really nothing to play for here. It wasn’t a World Cup where we were playing a smaller nation where it’s exciting to get a T3 team exposure of playing the big teams. We weren’t really blooding (too many) new players because Rassie has already been doing such a good job with that throughout the year. What we did was negatively impacted a URC round and pummeled a way weakened Welsh side that is already struggling with gaining the attention and support of their fan base. I get that this game has been in the books and postponed since 2018… but read the room. We’ve played each other three times in the last two year now (and that’s not from a tour to SA)

On Eben… Im really disappointed. He’s always been an aggressive player but it seemed like the super thuggish behavior he’d removed from his game in the last 5 years. To throw this out in a completely dead rubber game when we are already ahead by so much (not that it would have been acceptable in any game, to be clear)… What it’s also done is made that the main talking point of the match, rather than it being about the rugby and how good they were (more so in the second half). Just quite frustrating and also just a bit stupid for his future career. He is a great player, but we’ve proven that lock is an area where we have the most depth and now more than ever, he is replaceable. Add to that the Sharks are going to be incredibly ****** off as they’re the ones that are going to eat his suspension rather than the Springboks.

To be clear he is one of our greats for SA in terms of his ability and longevity plus what he has contributed to our team. But to do this at this stage of his career, does tarnish how he will be perceived after he retires.

If that’s true, Burfict had about a dozen incidents before that. His hit on Antonio Brown in the playoffs gave him instant CTE.

Hmm - interesting. Two wrongs clearly don’t make a right but at least it gives a bit of context to why Etzebeth went for the gouge. Still, gouging is reprehensible and I’d feel very differently if he’d punched Mann instead. I would have respected and maybe even have applauded that kind of reaction.

I’d be in favour of giving the same ban to both although I’d expect Mann’s lack of previous to wind up with a slightly lower ban.

With the Murphy precedent established, he not only won’t get a ban, the red card should get rescinded.
