Not sure how much truth there is in all that, or even how much use it bloody well is. God I want Farage out of our politics all he has done is consistently proven how big a hypocrite he is and I thought he was odious before the EU vote. The fact he was the first foreign politician to meet with Trump shows he's vying for power in some shape way or form.

Problem is the man has done zero governing and is the very definition of a protest politician. All he'd done it thumb his nose at the establishment and rarely turns up at European Parliament. You may disagree with something but you have to work within the rules if your on the inside otherwise you're doing nothing useful. That make him next to useless is an ambassadorial role.

This will turn out into nothing though if May refuses to have Farage as go between I can't imagine it ever working. It's not like he has some great insight into the cabinet he probably barely knows who they are.
 
As far as I can tell, the only person who thinks it a good idea (to use Farage as a go-between) is Nigel Farage, and possibly his good mate, the Don
 
I imagine this will have caused much choking on vol au vents in diplomatic circles. Always hard to tell if he's being serious or just stirring the pot, but we've done the right thing by telling him to butt out. May will have her work cut out dealing with him.
 
Just on america. Watching some interesting post election stuff on you tube but cannot work out what "trigger words" or "safe space" or " check privilage" mean. Anyone any ideas?
 
Slightly more aware of trigger words myself although suggesting it's a 'word' is wrong. An example after two years of trying and not succeeding to have a child my wife get rather upset when talking about childlessness or the topic in general. So it's essentially talking about things that upset people for genuine reasons. Which is fine for the most part people aren't complete cocks if they know well for the most part somebody did carry on this weekend despite turning around to my wife and saying she would not carry on talking about what she was and proceeded to do so.

Safe Spaces I'm less aware of but I belive it's more along the angle as an area to express yourself and people will not try to judge you for it. Things like people with psychological issues so they talk about it more freely without fear.

A trigger is something which brings someones PTSD to the surface (which is fine if it isn't self diagnosed nonsense like the woman who claimed to get PTSD from mean tweets and compared herself to a war survivor. It's a characteristic of the 'snowflake community to fabricate mental illnesses)
I don't really know what form a safe spacewould actually take, but it seems to be some attempt by a fringe group of people of color/LGBTQ to resegregate themselves from everyone else. I saw a protest i Berkley where they linked arms and told people that if they weren't racist they could go another way.
Check privilege is the idea that you recognise your own white, male, non-disabled, wealthy privilege before you enter a conversation about something like feminism. Essentially if you're born a certain way beyond your control you have less of a right to contribute to a conversation, which is wonderfully ironic in conversations which generally surround the diminished rights of groups of people in certain situations.
In short with he exception of people actually suffering from PTSD, it's a crock of ****e.
 
Republicans have majority in the Senate and House of Representatives.

Trump also going to get 2 Supreme Court Justices...

Trigger words annoy me so much as it is used by those that don't technically need to use way more than it should be.
Safe space I think is where a certain group can discuss there issues without having someone outside that group chiming in. Although I think it has gone on to mean other stuff. But as a white straight male there is the argument that every space is a safe space which I find so annoying. (I don't really care about safe spaces but everyone should be entitled to one if they are to exist).
Check Prilvage ****** me off the most I mean FFS what the fuk.
 
I agree with Tigs people use them out of a useful context (triggers that is). We use them (known as trigger warnings) within the LARP community as sometimes we write stories that require people to act out what might be considered unpleasant situations. Most people cope fine but rather unsurprisingly when you put someone in to it even simulated who has dealt with it in real life they can have a pretty adverse reaction.
But its more of warning "if you get upset by this better not play this one". I've seen people go and cry for a good hour or two after a game because of it. Now you have a choice either you either claim they are pathetic, should cheer up and don't really have problem (remember your less qualified to diagnose someone's mental health issues than they are, unless you are a psychologist). Or you protect people by warning them in advance.

That's what causes misinformation to get out and people not actually thinking about it.

No I wouldn't do that, if people have experienced genuine nasty things in their life then obviously being reminded of them isn't going to help. I certainly sympathise with your wife as my ex wife and I had similar problems in my first marriage with conceding a child.


But you have to wonder how much of this is genuine and as Groundhog has said is just part of a snowflake culture where people just use things like PTSD and ADHD to cover up the fact they are attention seeking, self-indulgent fools.


In a previous job I was a shift manager in a very busy transport operation (no safe spaces to be found) and it was critical that all the staff arrived in time to do a handover with their counterpart. I had a lad about 20 join my shift from the planning team and he was late everyday despite me getting on his case. On the 4th shift (4 on 4 off) I took him into a side office and told him in no uncertain terms if he was late again it would go to disciplinary. He then said and I quote " yeah but I have ADHD" and seemed to think that explained everything. I think my reply was something along the lines of "I wouldn't care if you had an STD you still need to be here on time". When he realised this course of action was going no where he bucked his ideas up, wasn't late again and ended up rising to supervisor in a year. Obviously someone, somewhere had told him he ADHD and instead of having any positive effect on him it had just given him an excuse to be lazy.

I think we are all a little mental and that's not a bad thing but we are in danger of wrapping things in cotton wool. Being an adult means dealing with things that upset you, offend you, **** you off, etc and I think some people need to grow up and remember there always someone worse off than themselves.
 
Oh don't get me wrong I have a massive problem with people who try to excuse their bad behaviour with their problems. Sometimes its excusable I was dealing with an actual diagnosed bipolar person this weekend which obviously takes special care that I'm not really equipped to deal with. However what didn't help was the people round that person encouraged their behaviour rather than took them aside and explain what the problem is. As part of the very small transgender part of the community at large they are seriously at risk at alienating a lot of people of the moment. Problem the alienating part is mainly led by the one them who is bipolar (again diagnosed and on perscription drugs for it) so its handling takes care.

Trying to tell the difference between the snowflakes (and god knows they exist) who are just attention seeking and those who have actual problems is bloody hard work I try not to dismiss them out of hand is all.

I think its good thing people are being diagnosed for why they might do stuff or act in a particular way. I find ADHD one of the hardest, I'm sure I went school with some people who had it but it wasn't really diagnosed back them. However rather than be seen as something that needs to handled with sensible procedures it appears people use as it excuse for continued bad behaviour. "He has ADHD, what can I do about it?", instead of "He has ADHD, try this instead to combat the behaviour as traditional methods won't work."

We have a weird thing in society at the moment where we are at one too quick to dismiss people's problems but on equal measure too accepting of them to allow them to disrupt and carry on.

You were totally right to handle that incident that way though at least I think so.

They've replicated the censorious religious right, in many ways... "white privilege" is essentially the same concept as original sin.

Watching some stuff that seems to be going on in universities in the US you would have to say the Whole social justice thing is a new, very aggressive religion. People screaming and shouting people down because they are effectively None believers but then I suppose its only a bunch of rich kids so they will probably grow out of it.

Sorry didn't mean to imply it only applied to one thing. I don't want to come across as if I'm stigmatizing people with legitimate conditions, issues or ailments, diagnosable or not. Like most things I think trigger warnings began with a largely noble goal (eg a rape scene in a movie could be pretty horrible for someone who was sexually assaulted), but has been blown to outrageous proportions by people who actively diminish the voice and legitimate concerns of people with real ailments and traumatic experiences, by attempting to draw the sympathy offered towards victims toward themselves for totally self absorbed reasons. I truly believe that a person should for their own sake function as best they can within society.
