e.g. maybe Corbyn did turn down open seats, but the train was still busy? Corbyn may have let others have the seats and made the video when no more were available? His message would still be accurate. He never made the claim that a seat was unavailable to him personally, only that trains are too busy for everyone to get a seat.
Virgin's response was fairly indicative of the problem. They suggested Corbyn should reserve a seat in advance to guarantee a seat and lowest possible fares. But this underlines the problem: "book in advance" isn't a solution to people who aren't in a position to.
Whatever the case, Corbyn is right about the train services being a mess in this country. But I am not sure public ownership will make things better. If the train services were subject to the whim of the politicians of the day, it can easily end up underfunded and fall into the same problems as the current situation.
