All time best rugby player

Ok, Soccer had Pele. American Basketball had Michael Jordan and so on... Who is the best rugby player to wear a profesional jersey?

Impossible to call. It is debatable that either of those are the best player in their sport, especially Pele.

In a sport like rugby where each position requires different skills and abilities, it is impossible to call any player 'the best'.

Gareth Edwards was voted the best ever. I dunno about professional though.

gareth edwards had the best try, I know he was a stellar player but it might be a little overdone just because of that try. I think that if you look at basketball for example it's a little easier because one all start on the court can really make a difference. I agree about football and rugby though, it's difficult to tell.

JPR is in with a shout.

As Webby says it's a much trickier question in Rugby Union 'cause the different positions in the game are so specialist.

An all-time greatest team is a more feasible debate

jonah lomu

Put Jonah Lomu at fly-half or prop (for example) and he would have been rubbish.

Yea...and your point is?

It relates to my previous post is you had bothered to read it - in rugby, each position requires different skills and abilities. It is debatable whether Lomu is the best winger of all time, but impossible to say that he is the greatest player.

lol gareth edwards did a hell of lot more than just that try, you muppet!!
he is the greatest of all time along with playes like

barry john
mervyn davies
jpr
gerald davies!!

you get the point :)

Yes i read it before

in rugby, each position requires different skills and abilities.[/b]

I know

It is debatable whether Lomu is the best winger of all time,[/b]

I dont think its debatable

but impossible to say that he is the greatest player.[/b]

"He's the greatest player" There...It wasnt impossible to say

Nah im just messing around man. Just wondering, what would a player need 2 b the greatest player of all time? My interpertation of your posts are saying that a player has to be well rounded or equal in a lot of positions. But i could be wrong.

My point is that there is no single greatest player of all time.

You can debate who is the best prop, the best flanker, the best centre etc, but it's not possible to compare the relative merits of a lock and a fullback.

Meh he's not even the best hooker.

This is an unbelievably difficult question to answer. In 12 years of professional who has had the biggest impact on the game, been streets ahead in their position while making the significant contribution to their team.

It probably seems a bit obvious but Carter and McCaw are the only names really springing to mind. There's nobody in the modern era comparable to them imo.

For someone to make the case about Wilkinson you'd say his top notch performances for England came in the grand slam decider against Ireland or the Autumn test against New Zealand in 2002, but they don't come close to some of the performances that Carter has put in, most notably the second Lions test in 05.

It's impossible to say. You can only really say who was the best in their position and then you get into fiddly amateur-pro comparisons.
You could look at the players who changed the game. I think you have to consider that rugby has only been pro since '95 whereas if you were looking back over the history of football for players it's been pro for much longer.

Here's one thing. In 50 to 60 years who will rugby fans remember as the defining players from this era? Presumably the game will make great strides forward and evolve but who will people remember like they remember Pele, or Puskas?

professionally?...i dont know much bout pele but house hold names who have transcended the sport into the next level...air jordan for sure..tiger woods for sure..there will be NO greatest of all time in rugby..because ALL time is unmeasurable unless they stop playing rugby around the world right now..so that is always a silly question theoritcially...but in the way you have mentioned i know what you mean..interms of transcending the sport..jonah without a doubt..he is the superstar of rugby to the sports world..maybe not the greatest player in the rugby world..but talking on that wider scale..jonah by far...none as of yet has taking the sports world by storm and when he did he brought rugby to the level it is at now...lol..he taught todays backs how to tackle by showing them how not to tackle him..

in the rugby world???...i dont know...maybe after the next 2 world cups i can hopefully say richie mccaw..if he wins both with the same reputation he has now

Its hard to say who's the best overall but here what I think in each position,

1. Wilson Whineray
2. Sean Fitzpatrick/Keith Wood/Daniel Dubroca
3. Robert Paparemborde
4. Martin Johnson
5. Colin Meads
6. Richard Hill
7. Michael Jones/Jean Pierre-Rives
8. Zizan Brooke
9. Gareth Edwards
10. Barry John/Gerald Davies/Hugo Porta/Naas Botha
11. Jonah Lomu
12. Jo Maso
13. Phillipe Sella
14. Patrice Lagisquet
15. Serge Blanco
