Australian fullback Matthew Burke has been named Newcastle Falcons player of the season for 2005/6.
The 33-year-old World Cup winner scored 12 tries in his 29 starts for the club during the 2005/6 campaign, picking up his award on Friday at the club’s annual Big Bash, sponsored by Argon Properties.
Director of rugby, Rob Andrew, presented the trophy, saying: “Burkey has been absolutely sensational yet again for us, and fully deserves his award.

“He is a class act on and off the field, a great role model for any young sportsmen and we are lucky to have him around here for the next two seasons.â€

Burke also claimed the Ken Lockerbie Trophy for his average rating over the whole season, while in other awards Geoff Parling received the players’ player of the season prize, with the 22-year-old lock having made a major impact in his 28 appearances.

Fly half Toby Flood was named young player of the season following his 19 starts and five bench outings, as well as spearheading England Under-21s to Grand Slam glory.

Joe Shaw scooped the Falcons Community Award for the third year running after his fantastic work promoting the game in the north-east, while Ken Lockerbie was named clubman of the year following his tireless work over a number of decades, firstly at Gosforth and latterly for the Falcons with the club’s founder members.

The final award saw Jamie Noon win try of the season for the superb length-of-the-field team score against Brive back in October, with the West Stand at Kingston Park packed out for the event.

Young player of the season: Toby Flood
