Controversial rugby opinions

It basically is in Aus. Super Rugby starts before the end of summer and it gets way hotter here. They implement quarters if it gets above 35 degrees I think. Seen games at 40+.

Dupont isn't the greatest player to have ever lived
I agree. He is amazing, but the hype he gets is just ludicrous.
I would love to see some sort of stat about how people from the NH rate him vs how the people from the SH rate him. I am guessing we'd see something similar to what happened to BOD: considered the best centre ever by most NHerers while i highly doubt many South Africans, New zealanders or Australians do the same.

Of course there is bias and localism, but i guess it also has to do with exposure: the typical SH rugby fan watches more NH rugby than the average NH fan watches SH rugby. This goes for both clubs and countries.

Ludicrous? Really? I mean the guy is usually the best player on the pitch regardless of who else might be playing and almost always lives up to the hype. Whether he's the greatest of all time is a perfectly fair debate but he's absolutely the best right now IMO and by some distance.

Dupont is also an absolute physical freak especially considering he's a scum half. Aside from the greatest 9 in the modern era (Mike Phillips) I've never seen a 9 bounce off front row forwards like they're nothing and that's before you get into his unbelievable skill set.

To say that he's done enough to claim he is the best rugby player ever? Yes, i believe that is ludicrous. Really. Not sure he's the best scrum half ever, let alone the best player overall. Some pretty serious competition at #9.
It's as if the likes of Gareth Edwards, Joost, Gregan or du Preez played checkers or something else.

They were all freaks! Again, Joost, Gregan, Fourie, Edwards. All of them. I am not throwing a random list here. These are all elite among the very best. With resumes to match or surpass dupont's.

And once he makes it to the top of that mountain, and that's a hell of a climb, he's gotta face the likes Carter, Gerber, McCaw and Lomu.

Could be, but it's certainly not crystal clear as some pretend it is.
Is there a case to be made? Sure. Is it obvious and clear cut? Absolutely not.

Carter, Gerber, McCaw and Lomu.
I didn't watch Gerber play but Lomu and Carter wouldn't be on my list of greatest of all time.

Dupont I'll wait to his career I'd done on GOAT status in rugby but I'll happily call him the best Scrum Half I've watched play.

I approve of this terminology.

Professional only. Be massively difficult to do this at amateur level. Pitches are bad enough now let alone middle of august.
Amateur rugby in the heat is completely fine? I would suggest far more manageable than professional rugby.

We need rain or we wilt like hell in the British Isles

I agree top 5 is pushing it but you could list 6 players who started in that 2011 final that could be in conversation of better player than Carter. Team was frigging stacked.

Conrad Smith
Ma'a Nonu
Kieran Read
Richard McCaw
Jerome Kaino
Sam Whitelock

I know this controversial opinion thread but I've always felt that St. Johnny and Carter were massively overrated by their backers. Just kinda fell into the first fly halves to benefit professionalism in a key a position.
