Dumbest thing players get penalised for?

Honestly, for me it's the spear tackle/drop. Can't remember which match it was that I watched so far this week (may have been one from last weekend even), but the player picked up a guy without the ball (he had passed it), and practically drove him into the ground. Even the announcers said how stupid it was in light of the recent events in rugby league. And while I do understand that sometimes momentum can be part of the problem (especially with legs flying up in the air), there's no call to just drop a player when you obviously know he's in a bad body position in relation to the ground. And it's especially dumb because it draws a big penalty, and is usually quite noticeable (by the fans, players, and officials) - it's not something that a player is likely to get away with on the sly. So why risk it? Why get sent off for 10 - or worse, the entire game - just because you feel like disregarding major safety issues?

It's just dumb, dumb, dumb.

Yep. I couldn't agree more. Its just dumb.

All the players know that they are likely to to be carded, and with now four sets of eyes watching, the ability of the TMO to bring foul play to the attention of the referee, and the referee's ability to go back to look at foul play at any time in the match, any player who executes a tip tackle is just plain stupid.

I think the player you are talking about is the Reds' James Slipper (in the Friday night match v the Blues). He ought to have been red carded for that tackle (he has been cited) and the Highlanders player who did the same thing and cost his team the match is also likely to be cited.

People tip-tackle because hooking the leg is an intuitive way of tackling someone - sometimes that leads to a player tipping.

Its no excuse. It didn't used to be intuitive. In the past, no players were ever coached to grab a player and lift him up, or lift one of his legs up. They were coached to wrap and drive or pull the player to ground without lifting him.
