EFS finds a new campaign

Being talked about already in the other Lions thread.

He does have a point however. There's more logic to a PI test than going to Hong Kong before. Just shows the money side of the Lions (as some of the New Zealander's point out with the selection of test venues).

He quite often has a point, but isn't going to win many people over with his over the top rants. You would expect someone with a law degree to be able to argue much more persuasively.

True enough. Hopefully some sensible debate will come of it though. Usually takes someone throwing toys out of a pram to get the sensible masses onto the topic.

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with what he's said. Samoa replacing the third string squad of a New Zealand club on the tour isn't exactly a big ask. It would bring a fair amount of money into the Samoan game too.

No ones paying attention to me! Look at me look at me!
I don't think it's fair to say that. Samoa's game is completely underfunded, and there's no way of getting around that until Samoa is taken seriously in the rugby schedule. I think it's a good thing for him to be making noise about.

Why can't he do it through proper channels. Not throwing a hissy on twitter.

The major point against it though is that NZRFU pay the Lions to tour, they have significant costs and would the cost of hosting the Lions be met by Samoa?

The Barbarians game was underwritten by HSBC as they were the main tour sponsors, hence it wasn't a big deal they played in a half empty stadium.

So while i don't hve an issue with what he's saying in regards to the ethos of the game financially it's probably not a viable option. :(

IIRC, the Hong Kong game was paid for by HSBC as their main sponsors, not the Lions.

The test venues in NZ are assigned by the NZRF, the Lions do not get any of the ticket or gate money, IIRC they get a set fee regardless of ticket sales etc... the host unions make absolutely millions out of the tour.

He's a mouthy twit who talks some crap at times, but I agree with the sentiment that more home games for the Pacific should happen. I also think it should be a different side who goes there each year. It wouldn't be fair to just expect certain teams like New Zealand (despite their geographical convenience) to keep going there when they don't get a penny out of it. The Maori All Blacks, a domestic side? Sure. But they want the top sides so I think it should rotate.

Should be more pressure on the individual NH unions to give other European unions meaningful tests - the Lions playing Samoa? Less important IMO.

Worse are the people who indulge him or even agree with him on things like Twitter.

The fact is he isn't relevant anymore he is trying to become the PI rugby ambassador he should focus more on pressuring the governing bodies to sort out there own house.

Trouble is he thinks the AB playing in Samoa was all down to him.

So all the financial side of the Lions. Which I totally get, it's a business that needs to run since the game turned pro. However having a game against a Pacific Islands nation during the tour in NZ would be in the spirit of a touring Lions side in my opinion. No one is asking for a three test series in a different country! If they can sell out to HSBC's whims they could do that.

Also I'm sure most would agree that international rugby evolves slowly. From the growth of the Tri Nations to Rugby Championship and the European Cup etc. Going through the official channels is slow and largely ineffective (so it would seem to me, admittedly no expert). Getting public support might apply more pressure. Fuimaono-Sapulo isn't doing that in a great way though. Needs to cause a fuss in a more productive, less abrasive manner.

NZRFU is unlikely to be ok with the Lions playing any PI national/invitational team over one of their own clubs/franchises, and flying out midweek to one of Samoa, Fiji or Tonga would be a nightmare.

The only time they could realistically play them is before they get to NZ - given that the proposed game in the USA on the way over was abandoned, they clearly don't think they can play a game before they get to NZ.

Why couldn't they play it in NZ before the tour? Increased revenue for them as well as providing for any Pacific Islanders who live there. Gives the Lions a decent side straight off the bat to measure themselves against. Wins all around?
