England get 2015 WC

It's not like rugby is a non-existent sport in Japan; they have more rugby clubs than Wales!

England won't be able to afford it after the banks blow up and Keynesian economics is chucked out, leaving the Olympics with the budget of a tiddly-winks tournament.

So Italy it is. They don't have as much debt, and their spicey prime minister is relatively honest!

Agree about it being too early for Japan.

You're right! Thyey should have had Berlusconi present the plan for 2015. With promises of naked cheerleaders having mudfights (as that guy would surely suggest) as pre-match entertainments only the Welsh delegates would be able to resist!

Well done on getting your 4th RWC Wales. Fuggin A![/b]

Meh, tbh, I agree. We tend to screw up at home in WC's, and seriously we've had too many games.
Might have something to do with us having to share round the game when it was ''Wales'' 99, though that had a lot to do with us not having enough big stadiums.

England gets another 1! What the hell, didnt they have half the Welsh WC as well?

I'm not really against England getting the World Cup. I think you do have to spread the game but still remember the rugby fans as well. England is a safe bet and will generate lots of revenue. The 2011 world cup will not generate a lot of money so it could be a bit risky having NZ and then Japan. I'm glad Japan got it in 2019. Hopefully, Italy for 2023!

Maybe so, but it's still a chuffing disgrace that Japan have to wait that long when they should have been hosting the next tournament anyway.

A real poke in the eye for expanding the game IMO.[/b]
Nah I think Japan would really need ten years to prepare to be honest. They'll need to be competitive to host it and 6 years really isn't enough. The tournament would lose something if the hosts were unlikely to get out of the group stages.[/b][/quote]

It's happened before.

Wales were co-hosts in 1991 and failed to get out of the group stages. Oh, how we laughed.

About 20 odd years ago Japan had the most rugby clubs in the world - though this was partly because most clubs there only had one XV; unlike clubs elsewhere which could have several XVs along with Colts, Mini-Rugby, a bar side and a couple of veterans teams.

I lived in Tokyo for quite a long time - from the late 70s through to the mid 90s - and interest in the game was certainly very high, both as participants and from spectators. Over the New Year holiday period there would be the university finals on one day, followed by the company finals and then in mid-January the Grand Final of the univesity champions vs the company champions - all held at the 60,000 seater Olympic Stadium and all a complete sell-out even thogh all matches were shown live on TV.

There were regular tours by the 5 Nations sides and the games were not always one sided. I saw England snatch a win with a converted try deep into stoppage time and in 1989 Japan defeated Scotland (although this was also a Lions year (Finlay Calder was Lions captain on the tour to Australia) and Scotland were without many of their first team).

Since then i.e. since the professional era began, rugby has been on a slow decline. I was over there a couple of years ago watching my son play in a club game and chatted with the referee (from New Zealand) during the half-time break. He told me many clubs were merging as numbers were dwindling and whereas 15 or so years ago there was plenty on TV coverage of local games, there was very little shown last time I was there.

Hopefully the upcoming Bledisloe Cup match might spark more interest in the game (I've got my ticket) and the World Cup will, I'm sure, be a great boost to the sport, even though it is 10 years away.

Erm, yes, with a Debt/GDP ratio currently of 106% with the odds of it increasing to possibly beat Italy's previous record of 120% of GDP (set in 1994/96) and an economy slowly stagnating under a sea of regulation, corruption and criminal liability and a Prime Minister more interested in protecting himself and his business empire its a no brainer!

On a serious note, regardless of the economics (which shouldn't matter as it should be privately funded anyway) ,I would have loved to hav seen the RWC in Italy 2015. Theres a good article lamenting Italy losing the bid in Planet Rugby, I'll have to dig it out.

No, even if the world collapsed tomorrow, Italy or Japan should have gotten 2015 :( we have the consolation of Japan getting 2019 but now everyone has to wait a decade before the next two world cup hosts are chosen.

It's all about money, I was watching some sports show here, and the main reason England got in ahead of Japan is to combat the financial deficit they're expecting from the 2011 WC here in NZ compared to 2007 in France.. The IRB is 90% funded by the WC's and they see England as the safer bet to gain more profit.

So in other words, had the RWC plc not f***ed up by awarding the 2011 to NZ thus making certain that it will not turn an increased profit, none of this fiasco would ever have occurred.

You ever get the feeling that professional rugby is trying to run before it can walk?

Quiet you! I got savaged by a swarm of dead New Zealand sheep all moaning that the IRB was getting a "gauranteed" amount of money from New Zealand (same as what France paid I believe) and that they'd be "no loss".

True, the IRB is getting a lump sum from New Zealand in the form of a joint payment from the NZRU and the Government of New Zealand but that is because the competition is going to make a £20 million loss.

"Ah-ha!" they moaned, "but that is being covered by the government and the NZRU so we're NOT going to make a loss."

Yes, well..if you beleive that then you'll believe that General Motors hasn't made a loss in the past year either because the US government has been covering them... :eyeroll:

I'm happy really. I'd prefer that the next 2 RWC's was Italy and Japan, but i think the actual decision makes sense. The main thing i am really annoyed about is Japan not getting 2015. I mean, i was really really looking forward to konami making Pro Evo Rugby!

Now i got to wait another 10 years of EA/HB ********. ****!
