Finally, something good brewing in the Stormers camp

Today could just herald in the start of a new era for the Stormers, if common sense prevails at the Excom meeting scheduled for today.

Word has it that on the agenda is: Nick Mallet`s position as director of rugby. Last season, mr Mallet suggested that Kobus vd Merwe get the axe, but he was overruled by the Newlands excom. On today`s agenda was whether his powers should be expanded to include final squad recruitment and responsibility for hiring/firing coaching staff. Should this decision be made in his favour, it seems highly unlikely that V D Merwe will see out the current Super 14 season.

There is a big support base in the Cape for ex-Stormers coach Alan Solomons returning to the fold. Several ex-players have backed Solomons publicly, including former Boks Corne Krige and Robbie Kempson. It is also a well-known fact that Mallet is a big fan of Solomons, having worked closely together as coach and assistant to the Boks in the 1997-2000 period.

This was one of the most successful post-isolation periods for the Boks, including a 1st Tri-nations ***le in 1998, and culminating in a world-record equalling 18 wins on the trot. The feeling around the Cape seems to be that if the two of them can be re-united, as it were, the success story could be repeted. Solomons was also in charge of the Stormers in 1999, when they ended up 2nd on the Super 12 log, thus he comes with excellent credentials in this comp.

Hopefully, the Newlands excom can put their petty differences aside, and allow Mallet to actually be what he was employed to be in the 1st place. If sense truly prevails, it could just herald in the start of a new, much more successful chapter, in the Stormers` history.

NOTHING HAPPENED AT THE EXCOM MEETING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would appear as if there needs to be an amendment to the WP constitution for Mallet`s powers to be increased. Also, it appears as if Boland must also be consulted on any decisions regarding the Stormers coaching staff. Fkn rugby politics in the Cape again- and it seems like Fester has more friends in high places than Mallett.

Oh well, here`s hoping for next year- in the meantime, I`ll just continue to suuffer on in silence, watching my beloved team`s name being dragged through the mud even further.

Why cant they just play Russell at 5/8 ???

Give the team new direction, new spark and see what happens. It wont hurt trying.

Yup, that would definately be one step in the right direction, but they also need a game-plan and some decent fatties to get the ball to the likes of Russell and co. to weave their magic. Funny thing is, they DO have all the resources available to them, it`s just a question of getting the structures and the proper coaching team in place.

On an even more serious note, it`s been announced today that for the 1st time in it`s history, the WPRU has made an operating loss- to the tune of R12 mil, last year. Surely, surely, the Newlands exco. can now see what us fans have been saying for the last 2 years already- get us a coach who can COACH!

Wahey !

according to this

Mallet now has atleast more say to what's going on at WP then he did before.

"...on Tuesday a meeting of the Board of WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd, the commercial arm of the union, accepted a recommendation that henceforth “all rugby related matters reside with the director of rugbyâ€. Mallett will now report to the managing director of the board, which means he has a much clearer and straighter line to follow than previously. "

Phew, missed that one with all the talk of changing constitutions etc- thank you Boggle, and thank you God, WP Rugby Board and all others involved in performing this miracle.

May this be the start of the resurrection of the once-mighty Mountain Goat rugby team. The Currie Cup may soon be coming to its rightful home in the Cape again- it`s already halfway there, waiting in Bloemfontein(for 6 months at least)!

Indeed, allthough there's still the little problem of WP somehow losing R22million since last year

But as soon as Mallet starts kicking ass and taking names I'm sure he'll squeeze the money out of Theuns Roodman who seems to not know what happened to it all.
