getting in to county ;)

Pretty much the same for worcestershire we've had some awful players in the county before just because they have a good relationship with the coaches

yer thats what they say up here there is a college based mainly around sports as it does more BTEC studies so everyone goes there to try and get into county etc but av herd barney school is the best for getting into county on a " its not what you know, its who you know" basis but its either pay a large fee or get a scholoship wich i "sadly" never got but tbh i think ad gain more if i got into county and proving its possible and you dont have to be a "daddys boy" to get there.

* - Update - *

hi guys after this thread was started a couple months back at the start of the season a lot has gone on since then. still no word of county but when i enquired about it at the start of the season a senior coach in the club said he didn't think there was a under 17s county just under 18s but enough of that.

anyway since the thread was started i have gained weight (in muscle) by attending the gym during pre season and twice a week. but still havnt grown. as some people on here know once you hate the age of 17 you are aloud to play for the clubs senior section. as i turned 17 on 1st November the following training session i asked my coach about being put forward for the 1st team or 2nd team (not bothered at this stage which one). anyway weeks went by and still i wasnt asked. so i asked again and my coach once again said he would give my name to the coaches. finally very recently after being 17 for 2 months i was asked to play for the 2nds by the 1st team coach. i was told depending on how the match went would depend upon if i got a game or not.

so saturday came i did my usual pre match preperation. we arrived at the ground and with the other players we went into the changing rooms got ready and went off training. our side was winning the game and i was told to warm up. my time finally came, but the manager didnt know whether to put me on the pitch as the contact area was high and me only being 5 ft 4 (after being measured) the manager didnt want me getting hurt, anyway i went on. after the 10 minutes the match ended. i went and got a shower got dressed and just before leaving i told the coach thank you for giving me a game and that i will be avaible for future matches when i wasnt needed on a sunday. to which he replied ull certainly be picked again as once you were on the pitch you were fine. so i left with a little pride.

the following day i turned up for training at the usual time of 10:00 am but following a mix up with my dad not being up to date with technology he didnt know he had recivied a voice message from our manager stating that training was at 12:00 anyway i saw the 2nd team coach, coaching another age group (as he sometimes stands in to help them). he acknowledged me as i walked over and said you had a good game yesterday youll certainly be picked again, i was just a little worried about the contact in the game situation but once you went on you were fine. to which i replied i knew i only had 10 minutes to prove myself. later on once my own age group had arrived i was told by my manager that he was told i had a good game the day before. we started training and our head coach also plays for the firsts he confronted me and said i hear you had a good game yesterday well done. i was later then told by our forwards coach that they are thinking about putting me at hooker as my height and build is perfect for that position and it also would add weight to our front row.

i was also later told that because of my performence the day before the 1st team hooker had asked my coaches if he could do 1 ON 1 sessions with me in some training sessions as the 1st team coach and manager where looking to put me as hooker next season.

this made me feel like i had shocked everyone that someone as small as me could player rugby to a good standard and that height doesn't matter. this made me also feel asif i had completed the first state in becoming noticed in the rugby world so to speak.

sorry if i dragged on but there was alot to explain :p

Great stuff!
Congrats on the first game!

You wouldn't be the first player to transition from flanker to hooker - Tommy Taylor (at Sale) and Neil Briggs (now at London Welsh) both started out at openside flanker before moving to #2.

Congrats on your first game ive been a bit unlucky this season after not having a great start of the season and got moved out of the aase acedemy then i got injured and probably wont play for for a few months but tbh i need a bit of time off from rugby might try rugby league.

Does depend on the county if I remember, I know in Leicestershire its didnt matter a great deal what School you went to because the county trials used to run with the clubs not schools but Nottinghamshire was different again with the trials being run with the schools and you had to be very good to get picked ahead from someone attending Nottingham high school which it the big private school in Nottingham but that was 20 years ago and it might have changed.
