Highlanders v hurricanes

Well more of the same from the Canes, just way too many mistakes and penalties. Vito and Jane were the standout players for me. Cruden... I just hope both DC and Slade are fit in 7 months.

Outstanding!

The Highlanders don't have the big stars that the Hurricanes have, so if they wanted to win, they needed to guts it out for 80 minutes. And that is exactly what they did.

Congrtaz Highlanders. They really took it to the Canes, they really missed Weepu because Keats had a crap game he got bullied all game by Cowan,Ma'a got hard done by the 1st yellow card and then did the most dumbest shoulder charge tryna block Cowan's kick lol and got red card.

Oof! If you ignore the bit where Cowan rolls around on the floor then gets up smiling, that's quite a hit :p

Cowan should of got yellow carded for that bit of acting lol good hit Nonu i never liked Cowan hehehe

Well there goes my multi-bet. Great win for the Highlanders and a promising start. Both teams are still rusty in possesion.

Lima needs to work on his basics, some of his passes might have been too hard to his fellow team mates and his goal kicking needs some long hours spent on it.

Jane and Cruden were the pick of the 'Canes backs for me, of all those stars in the backs none of them really shined tonight. I felt Treeby had a better game than his opposite (Nonu).

Thompson, Cowan and McIntosh had huge contributions.

Ugh. I have egg on my face.

For me, the Canes just lacked in any front foot ball. They got absolutely dominated up front. Stuart Dickenson was terrible, the Highlanders deserved to win, but Dickenson's officiating at the ruck was just so poor. Most incompotant ref in the comp, and I knew it would be a crap match from the minute I saw his smug little face. That being said, the Canes forwards got dominated all over the park. They failed to string together any fluid play, and relied on the backs trying to do something outstanding while moving backwards. Gear and Savea must have seen the ball 5 times the entire match.

Nonu probably shouldn't have received the second yellow card, but any number of Highlanders should have received a yellow at the breakdown. That being said, the Highlanders played like a team, and the Canes appeared incompotant. Any criticisms of Cruden seem a tad unfair. He missed two kicks, but he made plenty of good breaks in a team who was constantly moving backwards.

This will be why Canes finish 3rd in NZ Conf., maybe even 4th. Cruden made breaks knowing that not enough were backing up, although he was arguably still the Canes best player, but he's definitely not good enough to backup DC. The worst group of the match were the Canes forwards, they were really stupid to let go of Waldroms and MPatterson. What difference does having a dangerous backline if the team cant keep the frakkin ball, albeit against Highlanders pack that has worked over even the strongest like the Saders and the Bulls in recent seasons.

PS: Stu should be fired for that disgrace of a game.

Pretty much the way I saw it too ... a bit of an ugly match with lots of mistakes by both sides - you could tell it was the first game of the season

Poor game, Nonu screwed my score prediction over.
Sopoaga's kicking was poor and will no doubt be behind Slade, but he seems decent.

Treeby sure did cause Ma'a wasn't on field long enough to do anything, pretty easy to have a better game when your opposite marker isn't there lol

Thank god they had pre-season hit outs, if not the rustiness may have been worse.

Yeah true that but there was one stage when Ma'a was on the field and Treeby still took it up strongly with a good drive. Thats just one example Treeby undoubtedly had a good game, he was there for his team and put his hand up for a big game. It wasnt Treebys fault Ma'a wasnt there, Treeby turned up.

I still rate Ma'a over Shaun but last night the pat on the back would have to go to Treeby.

I've seen Nonu do those late shoulder charges so many times, i'm glad he's finally been called for it coz he usually gets away with it. there needs to be a video compilation of all the late shoulder charges he's done in his career

good win for the highlanders but i think they should have won by more since the hurricanes had 14 men for almost the entire game. they played with great enthusiasm though but they didn't capitalize on a lot of scoring opportunities. Sopoagas kicking was unusually off too, in the ITM Cup he hardly ever missed a kick
