The name change is insignificant in itself. The title IRB only came into effect in 1998 so it's not as though it has a ton of history behind it.

What I'm more interested in is seeing whether the name change is a catalyst for reform in the way the sport is governed. Does it see us move away from the dominance of Sanzar and the 6 Nations to a more open body which is less about preserving the place of the old guard and more about turning the sport truly global.

Can't wait for next year's special edition of the popular magazine covering the international tournament- Rugby World World Rugby Rugby World Cup Edition

The power crazy T***s.............what does World Rugby mean anything more than International Rugby Board....probably just an excuse to funnel some funds to one of their mates who are employed to come up with the new logo and branding for many tens of thousands of euros!!

Bingo.

Still, I find it quite amazing that this is the best name they could put together.

IRB was fine and made sense.

Utter bollix, A shameless waste of time and money spent on "consultants" to come up with some hare-brained ideas. The money would have been better spent on grass roots development in a tier 3 nation.

I love how much it'll probably cost these developing countries to discard old IRB advertising, equipment, banners etc...

I also love the bit in the interview when it says "it'll make our dollar travel further"...wonder where the consultant's house is.

Some developing countries signed advertising agreement just some months ago

This really did come out of no where... and 'World Rugby'? Really? The name really ought to fit into a tidy acronym that has 3 to 4 letters. 2 is awkward and the name itself is confusing. As others have mentioned, it opens things up a bit for confusing names - like if a video game that is sponsored by World Rugby comes out, it'd be "World Rugby Rugby 2015"

I quite liked the IRB. It was catchy and all the big sporting organisations in the world seem to have a memorable acronym. WR isn't really going to stick in the minds of others. I think its a strange move and a poorly thought out name.

I wonder what it would look like?

Is it going to say something like:

World Rugby - Rugby World Cup

 can you imagine that ?! Now that's credibility right there: TEH WORLD RUGBY - RUGBY WORLD CUP. :)
I mean they could just go all out and do: Cup World Rugby - Rugby World Cup. It is nice though there's a huge emphasis on the word 'Rugby' though, lots of repetition, really helps promote Rugby. Rugby.

Rugby.

Poorly thought out really awful name. IRB said it all. It was like FIFA and UEFA, short sharp and to the point. 'World Rugby'? World Rugby what exactly?
Plus, would the IRB World Rugby Yearbook become the World Rugby World Rugby Yearbook?
