Japan Megaquake

Natural Disasters are becoming more common every year, and by the looks of it are getting even more violent. I mean when i was younger you heard about major natural disasters once every few years but now it seems like they are happening a few times every year and once one place has been hit and started recovering then another country is struck by these devastating disasters.

In fairness, tectonic movement has nothing to do with global warming, so the enviromental issues like floods, snow storms, cyclones etc, have nothing to do with earthquakes.

Or rather, it may or may not be connected in some ways that we don't understand yet...

Nuclear power plant explosion confirmed.

Staying inside for now...

Yeah explosion occurred at 3:30PM local time. The images from the effects of this quake are devastating! Did anybody see that whirlpool/maelstrom?! I couldn't believe it! It's literally something out of a movie. I have never seen a whirlpool in real life, only in cartoons & movies.

Bloody Hell ...

They were speculating last night on the radio that the plant had failed some kind a tests not so long ago. Hopefully there is no nuclear seepage.

There is leakage/something very bad happening. I'm currently sealing my appartment, not getting out till monday.

plus there's probably gonna be power cuts this evening.

I could really do without all of that...

Stay safe Charles!!

Watching Tv now, the tsunami swept the city up to the 3rd floor of a supermarket...That's like 12 meters...

Apparently the reactor is fairly safe at the moment.

The only thing we can be thankful for is that Japan is the country best equipped to deal with this kind of disaster. Thoughts with anyone effected.

Logarithmic I assume?
Yeah, I read an explanation for this - logarithmic + some other multiplying factor. So this one really was 8000 more powerful than Christchurch (edit - thought you were talking about the earthquake). Japanese construction has stood up amazingly well, but there was nothing they could do about the flooding.

As far as I understand the nuclear panic is over - reactor cores may have been damaged, but basic containment systems have worked and cooling by seawater should make the critical one manageable.

That's my feeble understanding. Awesome disaster. Just wonder what price we'll end up paying for it.

I've also read reports that four volcanos erupted yesterday around the time of the earthquake. Maybe more to come.
