Knee Op?

i'm 16, and have recently dislocated my knee for the second time. The doctor has said that if i was to do it again, i would have to have an op, which wot i could understand would include shortening one of my quad muscles and lengthning the other. this according to the doctor would help prevent my knee popping again. Does anyone on the forum have any experience with knee injuries, and if going under the knife would be the best way of solving the problem?

many thanks

Oh boy you're in for some fun. I (cue violins, the works) dislocated my right knee 13 times before it was "fixed". I initially caught the ground goal kicking in rugby, but as my knee twisted right around, and that I landed on that leg seconds later, it wasn't initially picked up that it was a dislocation, as it went straight back in. Was roughly the same age when first happened too.

Took 8 years, but as the last dislocation (after countless doctors visits, physio sessions, an athroscopic surgery...) didn't go back in completely, there was finally a shining light for the specialist to go from, meaning a reconstruction was needed.

I had the ligament at the bottom of my patella split in two, one side tucked round to the other side of the join, pulling knee cap across into place. Then muscles were shortened on one side, and loosened on the other to stop the puling motion across my knee. Had to wear a Scott brace for 2 months, the first of which I was strict instructions to never bend that leg (ie showering) as it would pull all their work undone.

My advise is that if there is surgery, make sure you do your rehab, and correctly. In hindsight, I didn't get stuck into the gym enough, and consequently knee is not quite right.

As above, listen to your medical team, and realise some pain and discomfort (like the injury itself :p) is in the way of being fully functional again. Good luck, feel free to ask any questions if I can help.

ooo 13 times nasty. thanks for all of your advice. I'm in the gym and stuff at the moment doing all leg stuff just trying to get it right. But if it was going to go again, i think i would go for the surgery, and by wot u said it would be quite simular to what u have had. Is it a painful op, and how long roughly did it take to get fully back walking and stuff. Sorry for asking?

I tore my ACL and spent many a month hobbling around wishing i'd broken a bone instead.
But the Doctors didn't even consider surgery. They claimed that surgery is the last resort and that re-hab should be the only thing on my mind.
It''s been about 5 months since my rehab ended and i'm back on the weights now, but i'm not squatting very much because i lost so much strength. I'm pushing 120kg and my knee still aches. I've been told that it will always be a weakness but it shouldn't inhibit me in anyway.

I just hope that if you do go through with the surgery that it is most definately the last resort and i hope you get better soon.

thanks. The doc did say it would be last resort, i've been having rehab for about 3/4 months now, and i am starting to see improvement. I can run at full speed and stop its just i feel the stability still isn't there for contact just yet. The problem i did last time is that i went back too early and depending on a knee support to keep it in and give it support. But i will not be going back until i am fully confident that i can play a full contact match without support, to be honest i haven't worn a support since the last time i dislocated it. the gd thing now is, is that i'm carrying less weight, which should be less stress on the knee. i'm now 4 and a half stone lighter than i was when i diclocated it, :bana: . which also leaves me in a bit of a situation where i'm gonna play, when i'm eventually ready to come back, haha :wall:

Yea it will ache for awhile, my arm that i broke still hurts when i do curls but its not enough pain to inhibit it

I Broke my kneecap during a game when i was 20, stupidly thought it was just a bad knock and played on - The next move involved me coming off my wing on the inside of the OH - started my run and crumpled like a sack of spuds. Apparently, i had split the break wider doing that. Off to hospital, and spent 8 weeks in a full leg cast (hip to toes). Once that was over and done with, i was in physio for 3/4 months. I followed every single word that the physio said to me and did every excercise i was given for that time. It hurt like hell, but i was able to get back into the game after a full 7 months. Going through the ringer of training, and being in pieces and almost in tears after every session was worth it when i was trotting off after my first game back.

The first month wasn't that flash, but in hindsight wasn't that bad I suppose. Could walk on crutches right away, then quite slowly after braces came off 2 months later. Unbelievable how tired you get when walking un aided, completely drained my energy walking 100m. 3 months at physio, then the gym after that, so 6 months before I was back to anywhere like normal.

I can quite happily play cricket now and have done for couple of seasons, rugby I'm careful what situations I put myself in only got back into it this year, and can't fully sprint, but then that was me not 100% doing rehab properly so my own fault. Op was just over 3 years ago.

Knee stories are this guys bread and butter. I heard a specialist opened him up and found out the locally placed tear gland was in fact the problem.

Nah, it was like a minute. I was looking up General Rugby for an article on training lethargy or low motivation for myself, as I am ridiculously unfit, even for my age and found this.

I thought it would only be bringing up the 1000th time an Invercargill person has made a joking comment on it.

I'm not sure it's worth a thread about low motivation, but it affects everyone from time to time. Anyone else have that trouble?

They're epic fun.

When I snapped my AC ligament I had a really **** reaction to morphine and my bladder stopped 'working'. Like I didn't **** myself I just couldn't ****, the result was getting a Catheter.

Seriously, go easy on the pain killers dude, it was whack. I had this chick use a syringe to squirt lube into my dong, then got this surprisingly large tube inserted innit. Man, the last thing I remember before passing out was this seering pain and the nurse holding my penis while saying 'it's okay, we just past your prostate'.

knee surgeries are always full of surprises.

good luck and I hope your back fit again soon

I personally have had a knee reconstruction, as my knee would pop out all the time. I think its worth doing.

I had an ACL snap twice during my career and surgery was the only option offered to me on both occasions. There was five years between them and the difference was massive. The first op was the most painfull thing I have ever experienced and took me 14months to return to playing. Second op was painless and I was back playing i only 9 months. I did the same amount of rehab and worked hard to regain muscle but within a year I had done it again an had to retire so now im walking around with no ACL.
