Hi, my first post on here.

I've played hooker for many years, and usually fair alright, until last Saturday when an old timer taught me a lesson I wont forget in a hurry. I'm guessing he dropped his right shoulder as my head was bent so far up my own a*se that I couldn't move my feet to hook. To say I got taught a lesson that afternoon would be an understatement. It's never happened to me before, and I sure as heck don't want it to happen again!

Two questions really:

1. Was a right shoulder drop the most likely cause of this?
2. Any hookers out there got any advice on how to stop it from happening again?

I'm 5'10" and 16 1/2 stone and had two really decent props playing on Saturday.

Thanks if anyone can offer any advice!

TBH

Well after playing flanker for years this season due to a heavy defeat our coach desided as my height and weight and strength is much better than the other lad who played hooker he said it would add weight to the front row. So just some scrummaging tips and stuff like that

Howzy

  1. Get onto the scrum machine and get used to body positioning and set up in a non contact situation. </SPAN></SPAN>
  2. Practice striking the ball cleanly and work out with the 9 how he puts the ball in. Are you going to strike left footed or the traditional sweep of right leg in front of left?</SPAN></SPAN>
  3. Bind as tightly onto your props as possible, it’s them that are going to stop you from collapsing.</SPAN></SPAN>
  4. Talk to your props all the time, count them into the crouch position (just don’t use too many long words)</SPAN></SPAN>
  5. When the ref calls crouch, get as low as you possibly can and crouch down when the second rows have come in. The lower you get, the better hit you can get when the ref calls engage.</SPAN></SPAN>
  6. Take a second to get comfortable before the 9 puts the ball in. </SPAN></SPAN>
  7. Aim your head for the join between the opposite hooker and props shoulders, this should give you a good position for a straight drive.</SPAN></SPAN>
  8. Practice your line out throwing in. Can you throw it straight? Jumpers all have their own style and height of jumping so try and get together at training and run through the lineout….5-7 metres isn’t actually as far as you might think. I spend about 30 minutes every Saturday morning just practicing hitting a target on the wall of my house.</SPAN></SPAN>
  9. In the loose aim to try and act as a 4th back rower. Hookers should be there to make the hard short yards from the breakdown, be ready to take a short pop up ball into contact. Put your body on the line when the ball is bouncing loose.</SPAN></SPAN>
  10. By all means take the short pop up balls around the fringes of the rucks, but under no circumstances should a decent hooker ever find himself anywhere in the back line past inside centre (clearly I am joking, but try not to get in the way of backs moves, as a front row forward you’re be expected to knock on and then blame the 10 for throwing you a poor pass).</SPAN></SPAN>
  11. On the line out make sure if you are cleaning up from the jumper that you hit the back of the maul, and rip the ball back cleanly but safely.</SPAN></SPAN>
  12. On the opposition line out, you are the first line of defence on the short side, be ready for any blind side moves, especially involving their hooker.</SPAN></SPAN>

And finally, the most important one of all</SPAN></SPAN>

  1. Don’t ever get beaten in a drinking contest by a back.</SPAN></SPAN>

Enjoy!</SPAN></SPAN>

sorry about the long delay.

im right footed so it would probably be at the front with my left leg behind supporting my weight.

and im currently practicing my line out throws sometimes they go ok, sometimes good and others sometimes to low as our first jumper is probably one of the tallest second rows in the county for our age. been getting tips from the 1st teams hooker. he just says when everyone else is having a game of touch just to warm up just spend about 20 mins throwing some balls against the posts.

since i last posted played hooker for at least 6 games going ok with the above being the only problems.

ps: ill try not to but when we do match of the match for the fiorwards and backs they get given a yard of shandy (personally i prefer water) and the backs seem to win every time.
