Patrick Tuipulotu's positive drugs test

Surely all banned substances are specified?

Not necessarily. I think if it were PEDs i.e. steroids, then these cannot be explained as being inadvertently taken. In PT's case the substance shown in his failed test could be explained by him inadvertently taking a dietary supplement, prescribed medicine etc. So, now it is up to him to prove that this is the case. The ceiling for specified substance is lower than unspecified - 2 compared to 4 year ban. That is my understanding of it.

We will have to wait and see - looks like he'll be banned nevertheless, and could miss the Lions tests.

I know this isn't really the thread for this but how prevalent is drug use in rugby?
How often do people get tested, and how long do steroids stay in your system?

Patrick's B-sample has cleared him of doping, and his suspension has been lifted.

There are a number of causes for getting false positives in UDT testing such as metabolic conversion and exposure to legitimate sources of a drug, but by far the most common one is laboratory error. I'll bet that when the investigation is over, they will find that someone fooked up the test on the A-Sample, perhaps contaminating it while testing.

The Tuipuloto positive "A sample" gave Mark Reason (that British journalist who now lives in NZ and tries to pass himself off as 1/2 Kiwi) the chance to spit his nastiness. In his article last week about Tuipuloto he managed to compare him to a drug cheating Belarus shot putter, and made sure to mention that many in world rugby think the All Blacks bulk themselves up by using banned substances. His implication was that this is systematic.
That's what happens in such cases - the mud is thrown. Tuipuloto should pursue compensation from WADA through the Courts.

Reason has large amounts of egg on his face now, but that won't harm his credibility since he has none to begin with

Tuipolotu should sue the arrogant little prick for libel.
