right, thoughts on this tackle form our club game on the weekend, video obviously give more context but i cant upload one

basically our 15 is returning a kick so is at full speed for a 25m run up

Personally those a red for me all day long, but I guess if he doesn't land on his head then it's a yellow according to the laws as he's lifted his legs above the horizontal and there is no way he's bringing him down safely that might mitigate it to a penalty only. Regardless it's incredibly dangerous and an atrocious tackle that is a penalty at the bare minimum.

Upon further reflection, the video might show if the defending 10 helped rotate the attacking 15 over, that could be the only other mitigation in that the tackler didn't expect him to rotate as much. Still a penalty and a yellow though at best, red if it's the tackler rotating him on his own.

Amateur level, that ought to be a red (assuming the ref has a clear view)
Clear lift
Clearly hips above the horizontal
Clearly not in control of the landing

At pro level TMO is getting involved, and allowing that the ballcarrier getting their hands to deck to help control the landing as mitigation, and looking at the involvement of defending 10 - probably yellow.

SO, Ref had a clear view and stopped the game to discuss with with AR's, gave a yellow in the end and the explanation was because our 15 had put hit hand down to break the fall...it was mitigated

we've cited it for futher review, the other aspect is that the same played had tipped another player past the horizontal about 30 secs earlier

Fair point, i still think i would be Red, but is alittle hard to know from still shots

Sounds like a technique issue.

Definitely a red, my level that tackle would have started a mass brawl.

well past playing days, definately not excusing it, i was the one the cited it for review as i felt it should have been a red and player protecting themselves shouldnt be a mitigating factor
For me outcome should never be a mitigating factor in these cases. It should only be tackle technique judged. I'd have that as red, but under the current framework there is room to mitigate it to yellow.

update, all for nothing, apparently we missed the deadline for lodging the citing and the fact the offical footage hadnt been made avaliable so we had to find someone else filming isnt acceptable grounds for an extension
