RC3 - Could someone explain exactly hoe the pod options work?

Hi all..Loving RC3 and wanted to ask if you knowledgeable bunch may be able to help me with something that's bothering me..

How do the pod options work on RC3?

I know how it works in real life but REALLY cant seem to pin down any hard and fast rules as to how this is implemented and turn this seemingly useless option to may advantage

Any ideas/advice is welcomed.
