Black Caps snubbed in World XI
13 July 2004
By PHIL HAMILTON

New Zealand may have won the one-day tri-series in England, but it has not been enough to earn the Black Caps any places in Wisden Cricinfo's Rest of the World XI to take on Australia.

However England, who the Black Caps easily disposed of twice before handsomely winning Saturday's final against the West Indies, have two players in the team â€"- Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison.

While the Super Series against the world champion Australians is not until October next year, the authoritative website has picked its best team on current form, with 22 contributors voting.

The snub to the Black Caps comes despite captain Stephen Fleming and allrounder Jacob Oram climbing to career-best world rankings as the one-day side enjoy their best winning streak.

Fleming rose to eighth on the official world one-day batting rankings and Oram to fifth in the bowling, while the team moved into second place with the comprehensive 107-run win in the final.

The team's nine wins on the trot would, along with his good form, appear to give Fleming the credentials to captain the Rest of the World XI.

Former New Zealand captain Ken Rutherford said it would be a tough team to select but if they were looking for a captain first, then Fleming would have to come into consideration.

"It they're going to pick the best XI and then find the captain from them it'll be hard for Fleming to get in ahead of (Sachin) Tendulkar, (Virender) Sehwag and (Brian) Lara," he said. "But if they're picking the best captain and then the team then Fleming would be the man."

Rutherford said Rahul Dravid would be fortunate to make the team, with his wicketkeeping, one-day batting and captaincy all questionable.

"He couldn't keep chickens, that fellow," he said.

"He doesn't even want to keep wicket for India...and his captaincy experience is pretty limited."

Rutherford said a fit Shane Bond would also have to be considered with Harmison yet to prove himself in one-day cricket.

Star allrounder Chris Cairns, who received five votes, was the closest New Zealander to making the team.

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh can consider himself lucky to be picked at 28th on the official rankings and both Dravid and Lara are below Fleming.

The website also picked a test team and once again no New Zealanders made the cut, although opener Mark Richardson could consider himself unlucky.

Richardson is 10th in the test rankings and would appear to be the ideal man to anchor the team's innings.

Doesn't make sense to me, fleming is the best captain in the world, and one day opener... tendulkar only performs good sometimes, used to be very consistant but isn't that great lately

Well what do you expect they always pick the English when they dont perform and they leave out some of the in-form players
