I'm a 18 year old scrum half and am curious as to whether anyone could give me some advice.

Firstly I'm exactly 5 foot 8 inches tall and I weigh 12 and a half stone, so 175 pounds. Im having a few problems with my tackling but was wondering straight off is that a good size for my position?

The other issue I'm having is knowing when to run. Tap penalties are a good way of taking the defence on but I'm still unsure when to run and when to just give the pass. Not been playing there too long but my passing is good and my box kicking is improving. I just want to be more of a threat myself but am not quite sure what to look for.

So yeah, basically am I a good size for a 9 and when is the right time time to run from the base?

Thank you

The obvious answer is when you see a gap. So you might see a space between the a and b defender after a strong carry that presents quick ball. If you see a gap, back yourself. Even if you don't actually make a break it tells the opposition that you are capable of running with the ball and that will keep them on their toes. What you really don't want to do is over do it, you might run with the ball 2 or 3 times in a game but if those runs are effective, that's what really counts. Work on your passing and distribution every day: passing off your left hand, right hand, short ball to the forwards and long pass to the 10. Same with kicking, box kicks are a vital part of a 9's game now so try and get your core skills as strong as possible.

What you also want to do is vary what you do. Rather than passing the ball from the floor every time, every now and again take a step out and bring the guards on to you. If one defender commits the others will follow, and that's when you slip a ball out to one of your support players. Take a step out and watch their shoulders. If they turn into you, look to pass the ball around the corner. If they don't commit to you, or turn their shoulders into you, that's when you throw the dummy and pin your ears back.

You don't want to do this constantly though. Being able to pass the ball from the floor, accuratly and at pace is by far the key skill for any scrum half.
