Good signing. Jannie is getting older and Wiehahn can't be expected to carry the Burden all the time (huehuehue). We have a few younger props coming through (can never remember which side Dell, van Dyk, et al cover). Allows use some rotation between the senior lads. Now we can focus on getting someone set at loosehead that isn't Dale Chadwick.
As an aside, why do we instantly promote our new signings to the starting lineup? Van der Merwe, Hewitt, no wonder Jan Andre left, I hope we tie Peet down and start him soon!

Well, to be honest, van der Merwe was the obvious choice to replace Bresler when he got injured. Franco has been our most solid lock since Muller.

Yeah, I did like Franco in the end, what I am getting at is he was pushed right into the starting squad. Maybe he did more at training, and that's fair, but what I don't want is younger players thinking that they'll just get shunted away and sign someone. That is what really got on my nerves this season. Injured flanker, bring in a Lion; injured fullback, bring in a Lion; injured prop, bring in a Lion.
Well, it wasn't just one injured flanker, one injured prop or one injured full-back. At one stage we were without Mtawarira, Herbst, Chadwick on the prop side, Kankowski, Alberts and Botes as flankers and Ludik, Steyn and Viljoen for the full-back position.
Only after we lost 3 players for 1 position, they added guys like Minnie and Coetzee.

Right, but we still had Stander, Mtembu, Kankowski, and Kleinhans available; Prinsloo, Robinson at fullback.
Prinsloo and Robinson are just not good enough, same goes for Mtembu and Kleinhans. Kankowski, not sure what happened to him. Did he sleep with Plum's wife or something?
The only one talented enough to get a starting spot in the future is Brynard Stander of the players you just listed. Prinsloo already moved to Griquas, Robinson plays mostly with College Rovers

Robinson has been starting at fullback, with Esterhuizen moved to centre (for the U21s), I think he will end up with Marais as our fullback options down the line. I'd like Andre to stay at fullback, with Whitehead and Williams able to play inside centre, and perhaps one of our standoffs playing at 12 down the line. Robert du Preez and Brendan Cope have both bee starting at standoff lately. Don't forget Jean Luc du Plessis at U19 either!
It's always great discussing the young guys coming through the ranks, but we won't know how they will turn out until they actually get to the age of 21-23.
