Should drugs be legalised?

After all the talk about Matt Stevens and his problem, what do you think about the legalisation of class "a" drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Would it affect crime or is it just society giving up on its self. Have your say!

Oh god...

People who need Coke when out on the town are beyond help. They're the sort of people who drink for the sake of getting drunk instead of to enjoy socialising, then realise that booze isn't enough.

Low lifes.

I don't know anything about Class A's, I'm fine with the fact that they are illegal because there is a degree of danger in taking them, albeit a fairly minute one.

I am a regular cannabis smoker, I don't think it makes me a bad person, I am a little stoned right now, it doesn't affect my life in any great way, if anything I drink less and am more inclined to work on the more creative projects college throws my way because I enjoy it more.

I think cannabis should be legalized, or at least tolerated to an extent. Obviously it would have to be regulated in some way, but it's not my job to stipulate what they should be, however, I think someone should be able to carry at least a quarter ounce in one consistent lump/bag/container, for personal use, or for social use (like you would buy a crate of beer to share between friends). Obviously there has been negative press about it, but a lot of these things only happen if you go so far to abuse it or notice a negative reaction you take to it (paranoia, depression etc.). Also, nobody has ever died from overdosing on cannabis, in case you didn't know you can overdose on water.

Now I'm not saying, go out and smoke some weed it's great, it's your choice, just like it's your choice to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol or like people with the same bits as you.

I'm 2 pence shorter, and I don't mind.

Yes, BUT!... The only reported cases of this are when somebody's directly under the influence of LSD. Oddlt enough.

Can't see the link between the 2 myself...

Right then! BAN WATER! Legalise drugs!

It's the way forward. You've opened my eyes.

That's not the point I was making, of course I don't want water to be illegal, I don't smoke that much.

I was just pointing out that you can't overdose from cannabis, which is a fact, which makes it undeniable, because that is the nature of a fact.

Gingergenium made some very valid positive points on what legalising all drugs can create on the Stevens thread.

You would take the majority of crime away from it's production and trafficing (but not from the end user who's addicted and needs cash to support their addiction). The people producing heroin, cannabis etc. could be properly regulated, money going to the governments of the producing countries. In this country, the substances could be heavily taxed, like tobbacco and alcohol is, funding the clinics, hospital and therapy expenses.

The price of the substances could be reduced (though this is probably a bad thing, as it would just mean people using more) as it's no longer illegal, allowing propper trading and competition to take place.

These are all great and everything, BUT drugs like heroin, cocaine etc. are so rediculously addictive, it would never work. Legalising these drugs would send the message that it's ok to use them (look at the binge drinking culture in the UK already). It would at least send the messge that it'd be alright to try them (how most smokers start), them BAM their addicted, spending all their cash on their addiction, loosing their jobs etc. When they're out of money, they'll get some in other means, stealing.

Let's face it, these class a drugs are not the same as tobbacco and alcohol, and some can be very dangerous and mind estroying. I took magic shrooms a few times in uni a few years back (back then, you could buy them legally in a shop, it was just illegal to consume), the first couple of times were great, had great fun. But one night I had the worst experience of my life, started off ok, them I began thinking about fate and deciding if it was real, everything I did was pre-determined, and it wasn't my fault. I promptly started spitting on the floor (I was in someone elses flat), chewing on random things (pack of rizlas etc.), then things just got really scary and black. It's something I never want to go through again, and means I'd never touch the things again, no matter how good it was the first few times!

Just my 2p and an experience I've had.

Lies. This has only happened to you. It never happens to other consumers. You slanderer. PROVE IT! YOU CAN'T CAN YOU? AHA!

Also, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's heard of the 'gateway drug' theory in regards to cannabis.

My uncle spent most of his adult life either in debt or in Jail. Now he's dead before he was even 45. All because of cocaine.

This is something I don't agree with. If people what to take cocaine etc. they will, has nothing to do with cannabis.

I smoked weed from the age of 16 to 23, yet never did any properly hard drugs (the shrooms being the only one, why? because they were legal to buy, therefore makign me think they were 'safe'). I know a number of other people who were the same. I see weed as less harmful than alcohol, it's about as addictive (less so than tobbacco, I can guarantee that), it's less calsonagelic than tobbacco, as you smoke less of it. There are less incidents of violence when stoned as opposed to ****** (you just can't be arsed lol)

But at the same time, it can worsen the progression of depression (not cause it directly), kill your motivation and waste all your money.

I'm just trying to add to the negatives to it.
It may not have happened to you - thankfully - but it still happens.

WRONG!

A girl overdosed from drinking too much water, completely sober, in a competition to see who could drink the most water by some radio station in America.

It really sounds as something she would have done just for fun too though!! Nothing is more exhilarating then trying not to **** yourself!! I mean, they have clubs all over the world just for that purpose!
I think that overdosing on water can still be considered a rarity.

A friend of mine used to be a social worker in a psychiatric ward and he told the most excellent tales of people getting stuck in their own little world after using drugs, like the guy who insisted he was an orange and couldn't stop grating himself, causing his blood (or orange juice) to spill out.
Has anyone ever heard of someone who succeeded in life while doing drugs? Or of genuine positive things concerning drugs, except when used when used during cancer treatment?

I can sympathise with you mite, one of my uncles is going through a similar thing, it's sad to watch...although I can't say I'm concerned for his health or wellbeing, although I do am sad when it gets to other members of my family...it's a **** thing to have to deal with.

Short Answer;

Yes

Long Answer;

Yes.

Rob Van Damn, a wrestler, was caught (for the umpteenth time) for cannabis possession during his reign as both the WWE heavyweight champion and the ECW heavyweight champion, now I know wrestling a show etc., but he was still one of the top guys in his job, in his industry, no doubt one of the most highly paid and respected at the time. That's pretty successful.

There was a film released recently called "Super High Me" which explains what it's like to use cannabis (use as in smoke and eat/drink) for a month straight to see its effects, like Super Size Me. You'll no doubt find it on rapidshare if you want to dl it. He made a lot of money from it.

The guys who make High Time must be pretty well off.

Jimmy Hendrix

The Beatles

Cheech and Chong

Paul Merhton

Roger Moore

And another large group of musicians in the Stoner Doom genre.

There are tonnes.

Barack Obama, he's admitted he smoked grass at some time, obviously he doesn't smoke it all the time, but I think, he said he has smoked it before.

Stay away from pills, powders and needles.
If it grows in the ground it's probably OK. - Knocked Up

Couple that with 'balance is the key to healthy living', and you should be just fine.

No way should drugs be legalised. I don't care what it is Cannabis, Cocaine none of it should be legal. I use to smoke erb when I was at school from when I was 14-17 I will admit it use to relax me and I enjoyed alot of things more but I still don't think it should be legalised.

Class A drugs are too dangerous and have no place in society. Decriminalising Cannabis might be alright I only say that because if its made legal than alot of people I know wont be able to sell any and would become poor and with the recession wouldn't be able to make ends meet.

Also to add to that list dundeesmiffy all the rappers that go on about smoking weed are very successful and Bill Clinton once said he tried smoking weed as a uni student but has never again.
