Should Rugby Union Use NFL-Style Goalposts?

Why would the base of the post have to be in the dead ball area? You could simply have the posts 2 meters or so behind the try line in the try area. It would pose no greater risk than current posts if they were padded.

That's exactly what I was saying. Have the exact same post as football, with the crossbar above the try line. No more scoring against the post.

This article is in response to some comments on Aaron Smith's try versus the Stormers yesterday

Having heard what people are suggesting about changing the goalposts we followed up with this article, concluding that it would be a massive pain to do so and isn't worth it, provided this is a relative rare occurrence. I was wondering what you guys thought of the try, we thought it was pretty awesome thinking and execution!

Yes definitely! Crossbars should be on the dead-ball lines.
And the length of field of play should be 94m, and the length of ingoals should be 6m. The length from halfway-line to goals becomes only 3m longer.

No issue with that try at all, happy to see more of them for the time being.

More of them? I'm not sure. The same amount I have no problem with. I'm only concerned if it becomes a tactic to have the post block a tackler and to touch down short of the line on the pad.

It is only a minor and insignificant little thing, but it is something that provokes a bit of thought. If they were inventing the sport again, I'd say NFL style posts would be preferable due to the solitary post on the ground, but the H posts are so iconic that it would be a shame to lose them.
