England winger David Strettle's World Cup chances look slim after he broke a bone in his foot in training.

The injury to the fifth metatarsal in his left foot happened while he was running in training on Tuesday and there was no-one else in involved.

He will see a specialist on Wednesday night and England boss Brian Ashton will not make a decision on his future until he has seen the doctor's report.

"I'm obviously sorry to hear about his injury," said Ashton.

"I wish him a speedy recovery. I won't decide about a possible replacement until I receive a briefing of the consultation on Thursday."

The 24-year-old Harlequins player, who has three caps, has made a big impression since coming into the England team for the Six Nations game against Ireland, after Jason Robinson suffered a neck injury in training.

But he has also endured some bad luck, missing both England's Tests against South Africa after being hospitalised with a stomach virus which forced him home from the tour.

It now looks like he may also be denied the chance to play in the World Cup as well.

England footballers David Beckham and Wayne Rooney both endured seven-week absences when they suffered similar injuries before the 2002 European Championships and 2006 World Cup respectively.

If Strettle needed a similar lay-off, he would miss all England's group stage games.

Ashton has already ruled uncapped Bristol number eight Dan Ward-Smith out of his World Cup plans after he failed to recover in time from a knee injury. Centre Mike Tindall (leg) also looks set to miss the tournament while Mark Cueto (groin), Tom Rees (hamstring) and Peter Richards (back) are currently battling injuries.

This has to be the golden chance for either Paul Sackey or Josh Lewsey to make a mark now in this weekends game. The good news for these two is that really now they are playing for a place in the starting XV rather than for a place period in the squad of 30.

A body blow to poor Strettle though, although if 83,000 odd raging Irish fans (he didn't really seem to notice that he was at Croke Park) or 74,000 odd Welsh people can't unsettle him, I doubt he'll be that bothered about a problem with one of his feet.

True. It would be a shame though if he missed the tournament. even though he has only had limited opportunity, he looked a class operator.

The guy is awesome, not even a packed Loftus Versfeld would spook this guy, he just keeps on running, nothing fazes him. Which is why it is so sad that he might not be able to participate in this world cup at all :( Seriously, this man is made of win.

:wall: NOOOOOOOOO

I was actually looking forward to watch him against Habana.

Strettle forfait

=====> Strettle is definitively out, it's my favourite english player.

 yea me too.i always like to watch this type of challenges

From what I have seen of him, I had him down to be England's best back three player in the WC.

Agreed, it's a big blow; it's actually twice the blow as a Quins fan as we were going to lose him for the duration anyway, but now he's got to rehabilitate as well. It may be a little early to herald him as the saviour of the back divison though. He's had some great games at international level and would have liked to see him and Cueto on the wings with Billy at FB for the World Cup, but we've no real indication of how he'll turn out at international level. He's been consistently fantastic for us, so let's wait for the six nations to come back round and we should get some clarity on it. Will be interesting if he's playing outside Mike Brown by that point as well, which would be a good shout when/if Robinson goes after the world cup.

Agreed. Whilst having a great season last year I don't think we should be pinning our hopes on him just yet (remember Balshaw?). He was given terrible ball in the Wales game and was unfairly criticised in the press afterwards as being a one hit wonder. Hopefully we'll get to see him perform regularly next spring in order to find out whether he really is what we're hoping for internationally.

Looking at the RWC squad though, I really wish he was going!

Kudos on the Mike Brown mention. He was the absolute business last year and could be a shoe-in for an appearance in the 6N if he has a good start this term, especially given Abendanon's defensive mistakes this summer.

What a shame. At least he is still young and there will be more world cups for him.
