Back many a year ago in the medieval times the stocks were a common form of punishment so that the criminal himself could be humiliated and brandished in public for the crime he/she committed, thus revealing themselves and their crimes for all to see.
We still had civilised standards back then which dates just over a thousand years ago and if a person raped someone or sexually abused a child then they would be sent to trial charged for unlawful carnal knowledge.
If found guilty they would be sent to the stocks and the crime (abbreviated) was written across the planks for all to see: -
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge - literally meaning to know what it's like to have unlawful sex.
