The technology thread

I'm becoming quite sceptical about all these breakthroughs. They keep saying these are happening yet there don't appear to be the promised leaps in performance, longevity, charging speed or lifespan. Things are improving sure but I think I've seen 3 or 4 supposed breakthroughs that were supposed to improve on something by a pretty significant factor and yet they haven't materialised.

Don't know about EV li-ion batteries but for EAPCs, the battery tech is getting better and reflected in the range they can do. My Bosch 625w can do About 63 miles on a 100% charged on eco mode. Although I have never tested it as I never allow it to run below 20%.

New batteries in their bikes go up to 800Ws and they can apparently have ranges of up to 100 miles on certain Riese & Muller bikes. There's a lag with the tech in these batteries from the lab to the market.

Solid state batteries, that I am sceptical about.

Looking at getting a VPN as going to be travelling a bit. Even when in the UK, do people feel VPNs are worth it?

What are the benefits?

Looking at NordVPN, 2 years for £80

When I lived in Colombia I used ExpressVPN with no issues

I used NordVPN in the UK it can be useful when on public WiFi and hotels.

But having not spent as much time in Canada as I was Ive stopped paying for it.

I currently use Surfshark. Had issues with Nord in some countries where they regulate VPNs and it wouldn't connect properly.

I've got my UK SIM and Qatari SIM here. Got a reminder about the test, but didn't get the actual alert.

I once visited the Netherlands and got their emergency test alert even though I was using my UK SIM.

I think they send it to all mobile devices that connected to a local network at the time and so physical location seems to trump origin of SIM card which makes sense if people need to evacuate or take other action.
