Rugby, a genre too little now in the category of sports games. 505 Games and HB Studios want to make their vision of the virtual rugby.

HB Studio consists of developers used to touch the sports games. The studio has indeed often worked with EA Sports for the past adaptations PSP, PS2 or Wii games such as FIFA, NBA Live, PGA Tour, Madden, NHL, etc.. In the past, the studio was mainly illustrated by the development of Rugby in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. The first risky enough given the uniqueness of the sport and the general lack of expertise on its game adaptation. Although progress has proved to constant. Today, HB Studio seeks adventure regardless of the EA juggernaut by granting itself the license of the Rugby World Cup. Competition to be held in New Zealand in September, preceded by two weeks the game's release (August 26).

Marked test ...
The near-final version Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011 that we had in front of us was presented by Alastair Jarvis (Studio Head) and Matt Lane (Game Designer). First of all, they insisted on the independent and passionate approach to discuss the development of the ***le. Certainly a roundabout way of admitting that their baby is perhaps not perfect but it is designed with a view to appeal to rugby fans, whether casual or experienced players. While we have no a priori on the soft, we must recognize that for the moment the rugby games have never really passionate players like FIFA or PES can do. Perhaps because the feeling of the player was not tickled to addiction. RWC 2011 can make a difference?

Joystick in hand, we feel clearly the influence of years of working with EA. The tactical management of phases like the Madden arrested (with everything you need for customizing the menu of workforce management) offering many opportunities on the pad, and the penalty shootout are similar to blows francs former FIFA (kinds 2003/2004). RWC 2011 but gives the impression of being half way between simulation and arcade. A feeling reinforced by the races of the players, whose support is sometimes fantastic. For cons, the transmission of ball is very demanding and unforgiving tackles. With practice, there is spectacular games composed of large impacts and rides to the Chabal-great-moments!

And processing time?

Where the shoe pinches a little, it is at the stage floor, very static. Players enjoying the game where the ball carrier makes a meter before giving turn to a buddy in the middle of a forest of arms and legs that grow in both directions will clearly remain unsatisfied. While it is obviously more attractive (and most common) to see long runs straight to the test line, sometimes rough muscular rugby is just as nice, especially when the game is on. Fortunately, these conditions turn out smart and influential on the game (ball and slippery ground). Another black spot: no video referee. The developers felt that it was more reasonable not to include the activities at issue when the camera is justice. And folklore in all this?!

However, the most troublesome defects related to the achievement. The game has great benefit for many licenses, the faces, the templates of the players and their sizes seem very rough. A time "clonesque" thought to be gone in sports games is back and ugly is a shame. Fortunately, the protagonists have very clean entertainment with wholesome motion capture sessions. The audience in the stadium, it leaves a double impression antithetical. On the one hand, it is nice to see the work on the sound environment and three-dimensional modeling of each spectator sitting in his seat, on the other, it is unfortunate to note that they are all driven by a single script.

It will be decided in extra time

RWC 2011 takes advantage of the license of the World Cup and, as such, it offers 20 national teams qualified for the tournament. However, licenses are negotiated team by team, some selections are entirely fictitious - Australia and New Zealand - and do not even try to get closer to the real teams with similar names and skins. On stage, those of the competition are all present as well as most international fora (although some are not accurately transcribed for copyright reasons, they remain readily identifiable). Content friendly but a bit stingy. Especially since the game, even if independent, will be sold full price (around â'¬ 60), only on consoles! A very strange conception of "independence."

One of the highlights of Rugby World Cup 2011 is the location. Simple and clear menus incorporating the theme of discipline (the friendly match is named "international test", etc.).. The comments are provided brilliantly by Philippe Sella and Eric Bayle, specialists Rugby Canal +. If he suffers from some flaws and gaps (a "radar" would have been useful to identify the positioning of players), RWC 2011 has still a significant gameplay which is not subject to the impact of approximation techniques . The game seems happy to except, and the gaming industry rugby is promised to go one step further. Although it still lacks final few meters to cross the goal line ...

Hmm, worrying that the shoe pinches a little, the folklore is a problem too.

Automatic translations suck.
Original preview is here : http://www.jeuxvideo.fr/jeux/rugby-world-cup-2011/preview-test-rugby-world-cup-2011.html

They say :
- Great array of available tactics during static phases with the D-pad (madden-like ), customizable in the squad management screen
- Same old Goal Kicks (like 2003/4 FIFA)
- Halfway throught simulation and arcade, impression reinforced by the running game, with sometimes strange changes of running angles.
- Ball transmission very demanding, tackles really effective: After a bit of playtime, we have spectacular games with lots of running and Chabal-like hard hits.

- Breakdown, ruck phases very static, forward-based fighting game lovers won't be satisifed.
- Climatic conditions have influence on gameplay (slippery terrain and ball)
- No video Ref

- Where the game is most lacking is in the presentation field : Faces, sizes and builds of players are very approximative, players look like clones
- Animations are very good (motion-capture based)
- Crowd : Great atmosphere sound, full 3d crowd, but disappointing because all move in unisson (unique script)

- Licences : Australia and NZ fictitious, game doesn't even try to make the players look like the real deal.
- All the venues of the competition are there + most international stadiums (or lookalikes for the ones which aren't licensed)

- Conclusions and misc :
- Nice content but a bit light for a full price game, only on consoles (strange conception of "indie" gaming)
- Clean menus and nice french localization
- Sella & Bayle for french commentary
- No on screen radar
- Technical approximations but great gameplay
- Playing the game seems to be enjoyable, and rugby gaming made one more step forward but still has a long way to go.

having just random nobodies for New Zealand and Australia defeats the point of the game in my opinion

why don't they call the players names like or D Peacock, K Moelemu etc with the same face and skills set just like most other games do?

I think there was R Buacaucauni (Caucaunibuca), A Tronc (Troncon) and F Mallack (Michalak) on Rugby 2008

might as well call them "Team Woogongong" because it would be hard to identify them as New Zealand

maybe they should have not paid money for licensed World Cup stuff, and focused on licensing all the top 10 nations

how did Rugby 2001 get all the nations to get proper player names, kits, badges, stadiums and stuff?

Rugby 2004 and 2005 got all the nations proper player names but no badges and kits

2006 and 2008 both then had muddled up player name

and now this

have they got far more strict on what you can get away with not paying for these days?

Probably more strict when a competitor holds the licences in question, if either side did that then they could easily find themselves in direct dispute with the Unions in question and even a legal proceeding.

that just what I feared

The French media never sugarcoats bad news and this isn't an exception. Sounds like they've just stopped short of saying "arcadey".

Also in terms of the commentators this was not due to be announced yet but the french have jumped the gun, also when I played the game, I saw 3 teams, none of these were Australia or New Zealand, so I am not sure whether these have been shown yet... I would question the credibility of this review...

It may not be clear in my bulletpoint summary but the writer enjoyed the game despite its flaws. He apparently rates it above previous rugby games.

Cheers for the re-transalte Darhf... all in all it still sounds positive while highltighting the issue we are already aware of (licensing, player likenessed, player models similar, lack of game mode depth)

We can put most of these issues down to the supposed limited budget that HB have been on due to releasing this independently away from their former EA stablemates, so I am still pretty confident that from a gameplay perspective (both in terms of the mechanics/controls needed during a match aswell as how the game looks from a live gameplay camera) that RWC 2011 will be a good rendition of rugby gameplay that the majority will enjoy.

The real big question for me now (and the real crux to how long a life span the game will have after a world cup) is how stable and smooth the online play is.
No matter how good they make the AI, after enough play we will probably be able to better an AI team more often then not and in fairly straightforward fashion, so its the quality of the online play (where present) that will keep us hooked in the long run.

Why ? At worst, he could have read the information directly from HB on this very forum prior to writing his preview. We all know NZ and Australia will have generic players.

This Review is in English; but for some reason it took me forever to read it...LOL. This Review seems like an honest opinion...which is not good in a way; because it mentions lots of negatives!!! Not accurate/real to life body models and physical play is something i was worried about from 08'; seems to still be there. A Mix of arcade and Simulation...eish!...not what i wanted to hear. I thought the other Review said this was Fifa in Rugby form in terms of gameplay? That means it has to be a Simulation! ****** off; hope RC has a complete package for us. Hate Arcade Crap...we on xbox 360 and PS3 for crying out loud!!

This article seems quite the contrary to Rugby Spectators review, seems like they were not happy about forward play, and Rugby Spectator were happy. Don't know what to make of it, but did not come away from article with a good feeling. Maybe HB_AJ can shed some light on this??

Personally i think fifa gameplay is very arcadey. So i think u'll be fine. Opinions will always vary.

Im with you on this one. I doubt they would have been shown something else to you.

Also the translation is a poor one and haters will hate.

Seems very honest indeed :D But to be fair, how many of us actually enjoy watching forward orientated rugby??? As in keep it with the forwards and try and gain inch by inch??? How many of us actually play FIFA/PES like real football??? (pass around midfield till we find a break in defence or pass back to keeper if under pressure).

I can see the frustration, but isn't it more fun to run down the wings and use skills to embarrass your opponent. Seems really nit picky? But hey thats my opinion, just nice to hear the opinion of another person thats played the game. Bring on the more info :D

Gameplay still seems positive, which is the main thing. Opinions will always differ and so far we've gotten a handful of positive reviews/ previews and one lukewarm one. Still very excited.
People also need to bear in mind that this game was enver going to be a true FIFA-like game, as Fifa is a game with a monstrous budget, has been released annually for yonks, while this is the first HB rugby game on Current Gen consoles, after a hiatus of four years. HB seem to have done a good job of improving gameplay, which is what we wanted.
