Ok...well this thread is about fixing up the ruck laws. I thought we should be revolutionary and write down what we think should be done about the ruck laws. Then perhaps when we have figured out something fantastic and it looks like it may finally end this messy area in our beloved game..we should send it all to the many powers that be.

Well here is my first attempt at fixing it. I will actually send it to Paddy's squad and the NZRFU and to anyone who would give it some thought. I may edit it as time goes by

Let us be a cutting edge site and post your ideas on fixing up the mess!

<div align="center">Rucks are now easier to understand for players, refs and spectators.</span>

what?? i must say i dont see how that would work at all.. it doesn't seem like that is in any way a ruck at all, but some sort of substitute. cannot be in the 'ruck' unless your torso is on the ground? that doesnt even make sense.. you cant do anything with your torso on the ground. it's rugby, not wrestling, so why wrestle during a rugby match? it's a balanced mixture of power and technique that makes a good rucker. the better rucker should win, not whoever curls the most. any playing the ball on the ground is legal? every 'ruck' will turn into a dog-pile like an american football fumble.. every ruck will end in a free kick and slow the overall pace of the game...

the 'uncontestable when out of range of the opponent' clause has some potential (and is currently enforced by some refs at their discretion), and the killing of the ball when it doesn't come out is also already a rule..

Thanks for reading it and your great feedback:)

I can see what you are saying except with this it becomes a dog pile where you can immediately see who is on the right or wrong side of the ruck. Refs just look at one person as the offside line....everyone else also knows who the one person is who is setting the offside line.....then they dog pile accordingly.

There is no confusion if you are on the correct side of the ruck or not...there is no confusion with the ruck battle regarding "release the ball" or "hands on...hands off its a ruck".

I am sure you would agree that even with the dog piles that are a result of American Football fumbles, that for the viewer we know exactly what is happening....it all looks universal for every player...they are all diving and scraping for the ball. It makes sense visually for the untrained eye and they are they do not even have an offside line. All a ruck is with my new theory is the dog pile for the ball where the original ball carrier becomes the offside line for both sides to know where not to cross.

I also do not think it will be one free kick after another. I think players who are strong enough to hold on in the tackle and have supporting players strong enough to wrestle the ball towards their side of the ruck will create that momentum. I also think if the tacklers are overpowering for the ball carrier and the ball carriers support is too weak it will create the theoretical result for that situation...the turnover. Quite simple I think this new ruck will take the guessing game out of rucking and actually make players less tentative about rucks...they will attack it with more gusto.

Strong teams will have faster rucks and weak teams will struggle to get quick play the ball and be turned over reguarly. We have that already but a lot of this is often to do with a refs interpretation rather than letting the players determine the outcome.

Surely we can all see that the current ruck laws are too confusing. With the current ruck laws we have the players are being mongrel in the rucks but they are constantly having to check whether they are allowed to play the ball with their hands, are on the feet and not just lying on someone, aviod getting opushed over and seaking the ball, or accused of killing it, or they have to listen to the ref saying hands off when they are buried in battle and can't often hear, etc. It is too confusing being in a ruck when if you try hard you might get penalised and if you avoid taking a risk then the opposition will have possession forever.

I think the first place to look in changing any laws is to work out what exactly it is that needs changing. I think what you've gone for is to try and make the battle for the ball more even, but I think if that law needs changing, it needs to go much more the way of the ELVs. and merging the tackle and ruck laws.

I don't see the advantage of having all the players on the floor, especially their torso on the floor, as this is surely just going to make it neigh impossible to get the ball out? It also seems like it would remove a lot of penalties by replacing them with others.

I also can't see how the ball can come out quickly in one-on-one tackle. The ball carrier is taken to ground, the tackler then has to stand up, go round to the gate to be able to fall on him, and only then can he get the ball, and then he has to stand up and go?
