We didn't see much of him at second division Toulon, so he'll be able to help the Bulls get back to their best next season, since they've missed his leadership this season.

He wouldn't have been playing in the Top 14 whatever happened. The final choice was between taking a lucrative contract with Northampton or going back to the Bulls for less money. Gutted he didn't decide to come to Franklins Gardens but good luck to him.

That's the thing about Matfield, he's not just a South African rugby player, he's a South African rugby fan. As is John Smit who has also indicated he is coming home soon. Both players have said the Lions tour 2009 is a huge milestone, and what I found pretty amusing is that they both miss playing against the Aussie's and Kiwi's.
Smit in the May edition of the SA Rugby magazine:
Question (Mark Keohane): Do you miss the Super 14?
Answer (John Smit): Without a doubt. I miss the traditional battles and the big crowds. And then there's the intensity of the battle, especially against the Kiwi and Aussie players.
Matfield in the April edtion of the SA Rugby magazine:
"I want to win the Tri Nations by winning four games, for example, and not sneaking through on bonus points. Do you know, I've never won a Test match in New Zealand? Those are unfulfilled goals."

That's the thing about Matfield, he's not just a South African rugby player, he's a South African rugby fan. As is John Smit who has also indicated he is coming home soon. Wow what a fantastic attitude to what rugby is really about...team spirit, combat, tradition, rivalries, friendships, respect etc.......money comes and goes but each season as a rugby player in your prime can never be gotten back ever again.
Smit is right about the intensity...will any franchise ever not give their best against another franchise from the other Sanzar partners?

But in all seriousness, I thinks it's because you're only as good as who you play with and against. When you play against the All Blacks you're faced with the best attacking and counter attacking team in the world, when you play against the Boks you're up against arguably the best defensive and tactical kicking team in the world, and when you play against the Wallabies you... aaah... ummm... you get the idea!
