Not necessarily sentimentality. He brings a ton of experience, including 2 previous Lions tours. He's also brings something different to the other options with his lineout ability and in fairness had a decent 6N.

In terms of what Farrell will do I'd expect something like:
LK: Itoje, McCarthy, Ryan
LK/FL: Beirne, Chessum
FL: Curry, JVDF, Morgan, O'Mahony
N8: Conan, Earl, Faletau

He was always one of my favourite opposition players. Total pain, but I think the world has moved on and he's not needed.

But if you do want a highly experienced line out jumping 6 I wouldn't be looking past Lawes. I know he's been playing D2 stuff but by all accounts he's been brilliant. There is also likely to be a bit of a leadership vacuum around the squad and he might help with that too.

So if he does get selected this time round, which assuming fitness I expect, it will be because the head coach thinks he can do a job. So if he does get selected this time round, which assuming fitness I expect, it will be because the head coach thinks he can do a job. I actually think AF is pretty objective, although I reserve the right to change my mind if he selects 20 Leinster men.
