Good morning,

I am 26 and after watching and not playing rugby since school I am ready to commit to it once again! I have read some of the other threads like this and gathered up some good information but I'd like a little more info tailored to my circumstances...As I said I before I haven't played Rugby since I was 17 so after nearly 10 years out I'd like some advice a multitude of things that I will list below with a little information about me.

I am a regular gym user, I enjoy lifting weights and that's about it, my cardio consists of running to the squat rack when it's free and my diet would be spot on if I was permanently bulking...At this moment in time I'd probably be a dead cert for playing 1 or 3...however, this is has all changed as of last week, I have had a training overhaul and have included various cardio-vascular exercises coupled with 5x5 stronglifts (I have listed this below), my diet has changed dramatically and I am now eating at a calorie deficit, I am hoping for an average 2lb per week weight-loss, which is about 3 stone by the beginning of next season...Anyway I am 6ft, I was 19st 10 days ago and am now down to 18st7lb. <--- This does suggest I am a big pot of goo, but I am carrying a fair bit of muscle, my 1 max reps for the big lifts are as follows; bench press 165kg, Deadlift 200kg, Seated over-head press 110kg, Squats 160kg (poor)...Anyway, I want to get down to about 15st ideally, would I be mobile enough to play flanker at this weight?

Can anyone help me some rugby and fitness based training I can do as well as what I am currently working on...

Also, any useful info on rugby basics would be appreciated...

I don't play the game, but since others have asked similar questions here I would suggest what is often suggested to them - get in touch with a local club. They can best tell you were to start, and what you need to work on. Not sure how it works in your part of the world, but here in the States small clubs are thrilled to get their hands on fresh meat. :)

As far as rugby basics are concerned, the rules have changed a bit over the past decade. You can read the textbook stuff on-line, or you can get together with some blokes who play the game and shoot the shee-it about the laws over a pint or three. Personally, to me the latter sounds more appealing. ;)
