Well it's true, besides Tana and Mils and I don't know any other captains that are backs

Forwards. Half-backs could be just as good, but the man managment as well as game managment is a struggle. Most Backs are too far away from the action, as said. (I captained my school club from Fullback a few times before they went kaput, and often had to get the scrum-half to pass amessage on to a lock, or whatever. 'Twas difficult.)

Over the past few years I can think of Pichot, Gregan, Thomas, O'Driscoll, Jones, Blair, Cuisiter and Troncon.

I only started following NZ rugby in 2006, still enjoying the international games but I don't follow it that intensively

it completely depends on the players. o'driscoll is brilliant for ireland where as mccaw is brilliant for new zealand. the captain has to be able to stand up and lead by example
