They lost the ability or were there perhaps other reasons? I imagine it’s pretty costly and the only reason you went there before was for political reason to be honest.

Once they'd beat the Russians, there was no reason to continue at the time.
Each launch was colossally expensive. Only reason the shuttle got the nod was because there was potential military applications for it.

If you can’t go to the moon, then how the hell can you go to Mars or farther out?
I struggle to see the point of going to Mars. It's a nice concept but is it worth the resources to get there?

I get the impression, looking in from the outside, that they can get to the moon but they’re choosing not to at the moment.

It depends if you consider the theory that resources will be limited going forward, or the climate damage becomes irreversible...
They need to get advertising on it
With an ever expanding population only two things can solve it.
War or emigration.

Americans actually believe they went to the moon. Yet immigrants are eating all the pets, chemicals in water turns kids transgender, WiFi causes cancer the list goes on.
The population in many countries is about to collapse. Also there are massive areas of our own planet that we don't occupy. Mars just feels like an unnecessary vanity project

No maybe about it. Terraforming a lifeless planet is far far more difficult that simply cutting greenhouse gas emissions on the planet we already have.
Mars could never sustain an earth like environment even if we somehow did get it to that stage.

Getting there without being cooked by radiation would be a more pressing matter.
It's expensive and pointless. Mars is a very hostile environment that doesn't support human life. Why go there?
