USA news & politics

A brief rundown, in the US nominations for positions like US attorney must go through a confirmation process in the senate. This is usually a fairly routine task but occasionally some can get held up. Trump nominated Alina Habba (his personal attorney who failed to win a single case for him) to be US Attorney for New Jersey. This is despite her having no prosecutorial experience whatsoever and an abysmal track record. The US Senate did not confirm her and, as such, she was limited to serving in the role for a set number of days.

At the end of that, if she had not been confirmed (she hadn't), a set of the state judges could determine who should hold the position. They decided to put forward Habba's second and replace her as acting attorney. This is all well within the norms for these sort of situations.

Well this is the Trump administration and nothing is normal. Pam Bondi, doing Trumps bidding blindly, simply fired the acting Attorney and reinstated Habba, despite literally not a single part of the process agreeing to her being in that role. Trump withdrew his nomination of Habba to allow her to take on the acting attorney general role.

Just yet another case of a wholly corrupt administration completely ignoring all the rules and attempting to brute force a completely unqualified loyalist into a position of power. These are the sort of acts you see in countries sliding into dictatorship. Just add it to the list.

It's an end run around the law and regulations just to keep his corner
