England 2025/26

Im curious to see where SB is going with the ten spot.

Fin needs to be nailing down that spot really and we then need the back ups with enough caps to be comfortable if they are called upon.

But Ford isnt going away just yet and what to do with a Marcus.
Ford is the starter unless he is injured for the next two years.

Joe El-Abd Potentially off to th Pro D2…

lol

So he came from D2 and is potentially going back there. No shame if that’s his level but, as virtually everyone said, his CV looked pretty thin for the national team in the first place - that’s on SB. From the outside it looked like he over promoted a mate which isn’t a good look.

We’ve got a good group of players who could go far. But just how far will depend on the calibre and continuity of the coaching set up.

It used to be that when Mike Ford joined a coaching crew, the top man had to look out for any knives appearing in his back.
Now it seems to be that any new addition to the coaching crew, that doesn't include Wigglesworth moving on; and it's the new guy who needs to keep an eye out for knives.

I hope Lee Blackett has his well protected.

This is insane as I think our defence had been pretty strong, not perfect but not a worry. I can't see why he would leave and surely he'd want to see it through. Plus hasn't he signed a contract?

Also if England keep progressing and with the depth and he could be the defence coach who leads England to a WC final or WC. Not saying that will happen but with the draw and our current standing it's not a stretch

If I’ve go my dates right our defence was pants under him and looked good under Wigs? Maybe he’s been pushed as out of depth and just not good enough?

It is interesting that they were very keen to bring McGuigan in for the AIs despite having El Abd recently signed as a long term defence coach (and then shifting him to replace with Wigglesworth)
Noticed that all through the AIs the commentary always spoke about McGuigan as if he were fully in charge of defence, no mention of JEA or Wigglesworth

Maybe he just didn't work out at international level/realised pretty early on that it wasn't for him? He wouldn't be the first coach to not be keen on the sporadic nature of the international game (Mark McCall said he's no interest in going to the international level, for example, as he knows it does match his coaching style)

If true it still raises questions about why we are so much worse than literally every other nation in the world at retaining assistant coaches when it should be one of the biggest gigs to put on your CV.

Good lock breakdown in the Telegraph,
Lots of options, not a lot of experience - hope we do look at few more before the RWC, but not sure that we will. Itoje as captain means we've got one lock spot permanently locked down, and when Martin comes back from injury he'll be straight back in the top mix as he's too valuable and needs the game time to get back up to speed.

If we go into the 6N with Chessum, Itoje, Martin and Coles (and CCS) then we'd likely have A.N.Other in the squad, but would they actually make the pitch?

Interesting that they imply Ewels was drafted in because T.Dan is a liability at the lineout - not a bad option to have if the hooker depth breaks down again, can't deny he's not playing well for Bath even if he does make you wince at every contact area at international level expecting another card :D

Wonder if we can't find a top experience one if we might go guns blazing for Kpoku.
All gone a bit quiet on his return to England now - though media does prefer to try and run an exclusive "X player is being bought out of contract", a regular signing will probably just happen with no lead-up fanfare

Be interesting to see what happens with Sodeke - could he be tempted now that Sarries have signed Martin? Seen talk that Sarries aren't actually losing anyone (there were rumours that Tizzard or Isiekwe were going to leave to make room) so that's a bit of a logjam there

Surely sensible contingency planning is to see how we go in a few games without Itoje? Firstly to rest him as the guy plays virtually every minute and also to see how others go. His fitness record is incredible but if he is ‘due’ an injury we really don’t want it to strike at the wrong time with inexperienced back ups. Doubly important given Chessum and Martin’s injury records.

As you say, lots of promising options, but a world of difference between club and country.

No shame if that’s his level
JEA was the forwards coach for Castres when they won the Top14. He's quite well regarded in that role but decided to take on DoR/Head Coach with Oyonnax and got them to the Top14. Most people agree England have been looking pretty good and JEA is part of that so I don't think it's performance related.

RFU meddling again?
