Players invited to the first Springbok training camp of 2013:

Forwards: Tendai Mtawarira, Jannie du Plessis, Frans Malherbe, Coenie Oosthuizen, Pat Cilliers, Adriaan Strauss, Bismarck du Plessis, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Eben Etzebeth, Flip van der Merwe, Juandré Kruger, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Franco van der Merwe, Siya Kolisi, Marcell Coetzee, Willem Alberts, Arno Botha, Duane Vermeulen, Pierre Spies, Ryan Kankowski.

Backs: Jano Vermaak, Francois Hougaard, Pat Lambie, Morné Steyn, Elton Jantjies, Jean de Villiers, Frans Steyn, Juan de Jongh, Jan Serfontein, Robert Ebersohn, Bryan Habana, Lwazi Mvovo, Raymond Rhule, JP Pietersen, Bjorn Basson, Zane Kirchner.

So there are 3 newbies in Jan Serfontein, PSdT and Robert Ebersohn.

Andries Bekker, Johan Goosen and Jaco Taute weren't selected due to injury. No Kings players were selected as the camp is starting on Sunday after the Stormers/Sharks and Bulls/Cheetahs Derbies and they will still be on the plane back home when the camp starts. They will however be in contention for the second camp late in May.

I personally like that group as it is, My only concern is at Fullback. Zane, Frans and Lambie the only guys who can play fullback.

Unlucky guys must be Willie le Roux and Gio Aplon. Louis Ludick is also injured so he wasn't in contention either...

**Edit** Mods can you please edit the topic to say training instead of trainer?

Very lucky IMO;
J Kruger
Kirchner
F Malherbe?
F Steyn
JdV
Jantjies?
Kankowski
Hougaard
Basson
Serfontein (not a lot of time in SR though probably only there for the future I suppose)
P Cilliers

Very unlucky;
Le Roux
Pretorius
Labuschagne
JC Janse van Rensburg
- I suppose the Kings players aren't considered due to travel though they probably need more time in SR like I feel Serfontein etc also do- but Sergeal Petersen and some others in the forwards have caught my eye.
J Botes
J Pietersen

Worrying
no fetcher though I hope F Louw will be drafted in?

Yeah, well it's still very early days! he said he's only looking at the guys in the Super Rugby competition, which rules out all the guys playing in the NH.

this was the first year HM and his assistant coaches had time to visit every union taking part in the Super Rugby tournament for SA. they had plenty of meetings with the coaches and even overlooked some of the training the teams had.

Nonetheless, this was mainly the squad used last year, and HM is building towards 2015 so only time and development will tell what the bigger picture is.

fair enough it's early yet and a lot can still change but with this squad it certainly doesn't seem that HM is building towards much IMO. That said the selections were shocking last year and gradually became better and TBF injury has been a major factor last year and so far this year as well. Some foreign based players (like a fetcher in FLouw for instance) and a tweak here or there and we could actually see a decent side but still, some selections here are far removed from both form and/or experience (Malherbe, Jantjies being the standouts. Kanko also totally baffles my mind while we all know my feelings towards JdV and Kirchner aren't the warmest).

I'd love to see an 'Emerging Bok' team get some games made up of guys not selected or who will probably not make the final 22.

My picks would be:

1 Trevor Nyakane
2 Kyle Cooper
3 WP Nel / Marcel vd Merwe
4 Pieter Steph du Toit
5 De Kock Steenkamp
6 Lappies Labuschagne
7 Arno Botha
8 Wimpie van der Walt / Jacques Engelbrecht
9 Sarel Pretorius
10 Demetri Catrakilis
11 Sergeal Petersen
12 Robert Ebersohn
13 Lionel Mapoe / JJ Engelbrecht
14 Raymond Rhule
15 Willie Le Roux

16 Scarra Ntubeni
17 JC Janse van Rensburg
18 Jndre Marais
19 Philip van der Walt
20 Piet van Zyl
21 Joe Pietersen
22 Louis Ludik

Or give these guys a chance against the Bokke in a warm-up A's vs B's game.

15 Louis Ludik, all others are open for debate.
No Reinach? I know he is a nipper, but he has done more than Vermaak (?!?!?!?) and Hougaard.

Elton Jantjies, Rdadapele, Frans Steyn??

What is Meyer building? 3 inside centers JdV, JdJ, Steyn and you can class Ebershon as one as well. Long frustrating year... again for us

I think we all agree that there are gaping holes in the group he selected, but this is just a training squad, and just consisting of super rugby players. A lot will still happen. I see Frans Steyn as a back-up fullback if we look at that squad as a final squad.

But we will have to wait and see what happens in the next training schedule. Guys like Flouw, Ruan Pienaar, Guthro Steenkamp and possibly Jaque Fourie could be in contention. Along with the Kings.

It's no use crying over Ludick as he is injured, it would've been a valid point if he was fit.

Jano Vermaak is injured and Meyer called up a replacement: Cobus Reinach!!!

http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/Springboks/Reinach-called-up-to-Bok-camp-20130414

see... HM is not as shortsighted as we all thought... he could easily have called up Rudy Paige...

I'm glad to see Reinach there! he was superb in the CC last year and has brought some of that form to the Super Rugby. Partnering him Lambie would be a solid and proper combination.

So the first training camp is ongoing since yesterday and will conclude tomorrow. I hope some interesting plans was mentioned with the guys and what the plan of action will be going forward.

Lets play a game. Spot the pivot in that group.

We are sooooooooo screwed :p

Okay sure, here's a follow up question. Last year during the Rugby Championship and the EOYT 4 fly halves were picked for SA, one got injured who played the most games as during that period?? And who was dropped for poor performance?

I said Pivot not 10. Steyn was never a pivot will never be he is just a boot no more. He had the luxury of free riding behind FdP who 80 percent of the Bulls tries for which Steyn took the credit and the man of the match awards for.
Lambie was never the Sharks pivot and will never be. As soon as people realize that they would stop crying out for another ten when you are not scoring many tries.

What's your definition of a pivot then? I'm sure most Normal rugby knowers will say a pivot is your fly half?

and why are you bickering over and over and over and ****ing over about FdP??? get a grip man!

No need to start throwing insults. Why is everyone so defensive on here like people who is in week one coming of a heroin addiction?
A pivot is the creative thinker of your team. Example

A guy doing this for 80 mintues is not a pivot

If you can't control the game from 10 then you aren't a good 10, simple as that...
Its because your a Kiwi. You use only the 10 as the pivot. We use anything even a flanker as the pivot. And that is not a joke
