Heyneke Meyer announces first Bok training group for 2013

Nice to see Catrakilis getting rewarded for his great season with the Kings - I don't think anyone sees him as a realistic chance of making the actual squad, but it's cool all the same. At least he's there on proven talent, as opposed to Jantjies

I don't know why Meyer ignores Brussow he was quality in 2009 outplaying McCaw that year. I have a feeling it's because he doesn't like picking forwards under 6 ft. Either that or him playing for the Cheethas might not help either instead of one of the big 3.

Brussouw doesn't seem to know the rules of the game - he never releases the ball carrier after the tackle before he tries to steal the ball. I'm not saying other players don't do this too from time to time, but normally it seems to be a genuine mistake for them. Brussouw consistently does it, to the point where I wouldn't rule out that he is intentionally doing it, not knowing it's illegal.

Nah, Jano has been the best by far of all the scrumhalves. Sarel has a bit of a defense problem, which Jano doesn't have. And Sarel has been benched by his own team for a couple of games now.

Really?? Props and hookers shouldnt be stealing balls! They should be hitting rucks, scrumming, doing their jobs in lineouts... stealing balls should be the last thing on their minds!! And they not as effective as proper fetchers. We need Brussow in there!

Really? Every damn player in the team should be stealing the ball whenever they can! You can't score tries without the ball! Whoever is first at the breakdown area, should first attempt to get the ball, then focus on the opposition.

Also you are forgetting that this group is just Super Rugby players. Nobody from overseas have been included in the training group. So there is still a possibility of Francois Louw being added to the squad.

I kind of wish Meyer would implement a SA only rule. Louw would be the only loss at the moment, but someone needs to bring him back to SA. Would be a great signing for any club, but I'd see him returning to WP if any. Not a huge fan of Pienaar, he hasn't really been outstanding for the Boks, and I think that when on form, Hougaard can offer more. Besides, I'd select van Zyl, Pretorius, Reinach above him anyways.

I agree whole heartedly with this! I think this year has finally shown us that we don't really need our overseas players. And some of them that came back has been pretty average. There has been talks about giving the local players first choice at springbok call-ups. And people complaining about Brussouw, really shouldn't. If they all just scroll up to the beginning of this thread, they would see why he wasn't selected for the first training group. Now with the second training squad, his performance hasn't significantly changed, so i can understand why he has been overlooked.

This is once again JUST a training squad, and it's there to show the coaching staff who will fit in to their gameplan, who will be able to make the step up and who won't make the cut. I for one will be very surprized if Wiehann Herbst and Trevor Nyakane makes the final 30-man squad.

Plus im saying HM's argument saying Brussow gives away a lot of penalties is complete BS. Even Lappies has given away more penalties than Brussow this season but he is there.

No numbnuts!! I'm saying that HM picked guys who can do more than just pilfer. Ebersohn can score tries, has pace and is creative in attack. Coenie can scrum, and bulldoze the opposition. Bismarck can scrum, run with the ball tackle players back, throw in the lineout etc.

What I'm saying is HM is going to pick guys that can do more than just one thing, he's looking for guys that have variety, **** even Morne Steyn has shown a bit more variety this year!
