Coup in Turkey...

Failed, and increasingly looking incompetent - rumours that it may even have been a set-up by Erdogan (suspiciously bloodless, managed to secure approximately 0 of the people they'd target, small fraction of the military, whilst Erdogan himself comes out smelling of roses and a national hero)

Not normally one for conspiracy theories but if it was the full weight of Turkish army then Erdogan will be fleeing to Iran. It does look a little set up

Hmmm, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-europe-36811357
~2800 soldiers arrested for their part in the coup; 2745 judges fired for... disagreeing with Erdogan.

What the coup seems to have actually acheived would be the temporary take-over of media outlets; temporary closure of some major bridges; failure / non-attempt to take Erdogan, or any other politician captive, and to fire upon some empty buildings; using a couple of ex-generals and circa 1% of Turkey's standing army.
It really is almost as if their heat wasn't in it - if it was, then I worry for the competence of Turkey's armed forces.

Yes but most other European countries are not as rich or import so much from other EU members. If say the Czech Republic wanted to leave because Britain had a decent trade deal then then the EU wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Let's not forget the mess the EU and Euro is in. It might not be the best place to have a trade deal with

That depends on who leaves and how many countries would leave. Once again, it's mostly the fear of a possible domino effect.

Currently, the EU is a very important trading partner for the UK and it isn't a given that there'd be enough other countries that might be interested in a trade deal with the UK, especially countries that could make up for the loss of trade.

I don't agree with all the doom and gloom at the moment, but there's certainly a lot at stake for both the UK and the EU. But in order to judge who will be affected how, we'll have to know if the UK leaves at all and if so, under which conditions.

As for Turkey: The army's powers/influence was cut as one of the conditions to join the EU. That was widely celebrated as a huge step forward at the time... It could be that it's simply the result of that. No matter who was behind it, it certainly suits Erdogan.

It's does mean that are still a long long way off to joining the EU unlike the Leave campaign wanted people to believe.
Yet another prediction by Remain (that Turkey will not join the EU) come true. And Leave were erroneously telling us that we cannot predict what will happen...

It doesn't take a genius to have figured out that Turkey's political situation meant they weren't particularly likely to join the EU. Anyone with even the smallest, remotest interest in global politics will know that Erdogan is a human rights abusing megalomaniac.

So there was no deal between the EU and Turkey to quicken their joining as a way of getting them to help more relocating refugees? That didn't happen. No deal was discussed or made?

Still have to get all members to agree and they've met one of the criteria for membership they were and are a long way off. No amount of speeding up talks would change that.

Which Murdoch rag did you read that in?

The extent of Turkey joining the EU was to hold a conference on 30th June. The decision to hold the conference had more coverage than the actual results of the conference, because absolutely sweet FA has come out of it, as could be predicted.

The EU won't let a human rights-abusing country, illegally occupying the territory of another EU nation, into the EU.

It was reported by the BBC and the the EU have been looking to include that human rights abusing country occupying Northern Cyprus into the EU for some time. Obviously human rights take a back seat when Brussels is looking for another country to sell BMW's too.

Greece might have something to say about that considering they'd have to approve Turkey joining.

Honestly twas just a political game for Turkey to save face taking in more refugees.

What choice have Greece got? They are the EUs permanent money bleed. They are not even a country anymore just dusty place that needs bailouts every so often.

Also for those who bother to look Turkey was quite justified in the action it took in Cyprus at the time. Clinging onto it was wrong but given what had happened it's easy to why it wanted to protect its citizens.

I'm saving to buy a house. That doesn't mean I will actually be ready, or even want, to buy a house in the next few years. Nor does it mean that I will be given a mortgage even if I want it. I'm just assuming that I will want to buy my own house at some point, and preparing for it.

Just as EU are negotiating with Turkey. It would be wrong, racist even, to say that Turkey cannot join the EU under any circumstances. We should prepare for them joining, so we should negotiate and get as much of the legwork out of the way for if and when they are ready. It's just prudence. But in negotiations, the EU and Turkey are going to reach an impasse over Cyprus, about human rights and various other factors. And even if Turkey meets all 33 chapters of requirements (it meets 1 at the minute - science and research), nations still have a veto, including Cyprus.

Turkey may join the EU, I will grant you that. But if it does, it will be under EU and member state terms, and at that point, there will be no reason to worry about Turkey joining the EU.

And the fact it's actually in Asia makes no difference?
