Picture this. Conrad Smith is not available for the June tests or Four Nations series.

We know he is going on sabbatical during the end-of-year tour to Europe so the selectors will be thinking about different players and ideas. The solution is not straightforward for the All Black panel.
They could shift Ma'a Nonu out to centre, but he has been a potent test force since he inhabited the second five-eighths role. Richard Kahui would have been the ideal choice at centre if he had not been going to Japan. He is available until after the Super 15 series and can fill the wing duties vacated by the injured Cory Jane.
Which still leaves us to sort out the next cab off the rank at centre.
Those seen this season in the Super 15 who will get discussion time will be Rene Ranger, Tim Nanai-Williams and Robbie Fruean.
Ranger has shown his strengths on defence and at the breakdown where his work rate has been strong. He is difficult to contain on attack with his fend and strong hips.
<SCRIPT language=javascript type=text/javascript>aimRenderAd(300, 250, 'RECTANGLE','ContentRect','/SR=1/POS=2');if(!$.browser.msie){ContentRect_frame = $("#ContentRect")[0];ContentRect_frame.src = ContentRect_frame.src;}</SCRIPT>

If he continues to produce, Ranger is a strong chance to regain the All Black place he held in 2010 but there is strong mail though that he has signed a contract to play in France.
He may have a get-out clause. If so the All Black selectors would be wise to activate it.
Nanai-Williams has been in dazzling form for the Chiefs. In Kahui's absence, he moved into centre and showed how his pace, sidestep and evasion skills could mesmerise tacklers while he did an adequate job on defence.
Fruean has been solid but the All Black selectors have struggled to pick him because he is error prone and his heart condition prevents him from being massively fit to handle the position the way they want.
Nothing looks like altering there. So who else? Maybe Tamati Ellison who debuted in that role for the All Blacks in 2009 but has not been seen this season because of injury.
His Highlanders buddy Ben Smith would be my pick.
He was the last man to play centre for the All Blacks instead of his namesake when he started against Scotland on last year's trip to Europe.
He's played 12 tests, is only 26, has speed and evasion skills, is solid on defence while his distribution will lift with a change of role. Plans for the next World Cup are well under way and Ben Smith should be marked down as the centre-in-waiting.

Saili will get a chance at centre this weekend against the Hurricanes, it'll be interesting to see how he goes.

If I was bringing any new midfielders into the AB's set up it would just be Saili, with Smith moving in too. Piutau would get the nod as backup fullback to Dagg. Horrell also has an outside chance. TNW I don't see as a real option, like you.

I can't see the All Blacks struggle; they have B Smith, Ranger and Ellison (when fit) and if all else fails I'm sure they could lure either of Kahui or Jared Payne back to NZ with a AB jersey as bait.

I've not seen enough of Fruean or TNW to comment on them, but Ranger looks awesome.
He acts so ****ing casuallly!

...Plus, he's English :p

I want Ben Smith there at 13 to be honest. Ranger is good too, but sometimes takes too many chances on defence (though he's defensively sound when he's sticking to the plan).

if we had given Smith a run at 13 during the super 15 i would be alot more happt about this idea, especially with nonu inside as that could very well be your AB 12 - 13

the other point thats been put aorund is Smith is a hot contender for the 15 jersey in his own right so might you be better to look at someone like ranger for 13 with smith at 15 and then everyone is playing where they have all season...

I think Ben Smith has clearly been identified by the AB's selectors as Conrad Smith's back-up. Personally I think he deserves to be the starting fullback (and probably has been for the last 3 seasons.....), but he certainly has the skill-set to be a top class test centre. As Jabby mentioned it would have been better from an AB's perspective if Smith had been given consistent game-time in the Highlanders 13 jersey though. Ranger has obviously had a very good season, and would certainly be an option (if he stays in NZ). He brings a very different skill-set to the 13 jersey, but has seemed to thrive in the 13 jersey given consistent game-time in the position (though I understand he will be playing on the wing this weekend....). I'm sure Tamiti Ellison will be close too (once he recovers from injury), though he looks to be Nonu's primary backup at 12 at this stage (though I do rate Francis Saili, and Crotty is having a good season).

I get what you guys are saying - as that would have certainly be the ideal situation.

However I think he's good enough to run-on to an AB side at starting centre, much like Kahui does on the win, despite being a centre.

I've only seen Ellison play a handful of times, but he looks, funnily enough, a handful. Unfortunately, he looks like a Regan King or Casey Laulala to me- stifling All Black career comprising of just two or three caps, then moves North and is revered as an exceptional player. I'd love to see him get a bit more time, although I do also like Ben Smith.

Dagg has been too good for the ABs to drop, despite his middling form for the Crusaders (similar to Nonu; average at super great for ABs). I'd have Ranger and Ben Smith on the bench to cover centre/fullback/wing

Don't worry if you guys struggle the IRB could always change the laws again...
