A star-studded Australian team, featuring some of the greatest Kangaroos of all time will do battle at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Monday April 24th.

Currently, the Australian Legends of League* side will include the following players:

1. Gary Belcher
2. Kerry Boustead
3. Mal Meninga
4. Steve Renouf
5. Dale Shearer
6. Cliff Lyons
7. Allan Langer
8. Mark Carroll
9. Steve Walters
10. Martin Bella
11. Paul Sironen
12. Gorden Tallis
13. Bradley Clyde
14. Robbie O’Davis
15. Greg Florimo
16. Michael Buettner
17. Kevin Walters

* All players have confirmed their availability pending any unforseen circumstances.

ARL and Queensland league legend Greg Dowling will act as Coach, with former League hardman and cult hero Steve “Blocker†Roach acting as team manager.

Set to face-off against the Australian side are Kiwi greats Gary Freeman, Darryl Halligan, Kurt Sorenson and Darryl Williams. A final New Zealand team will be announced soon.

The Legends of League charity appeal match is a joint initiative of Bundaberg Rum, Landcare Australia and the NRL, with the support of the North Queensland Cowboys and AMP Men of League. The match and donation appeal will raise funds for the communities devastated by Cyclone Larry.

Bundaberg Distilling Company Chairman Tony Scanlan said, “It’s great to see so many legends of rugby league getting together to help out fellow Australians doing it tough in northern Queensland. The match looks set to be one of the biggest Aussie versus Kiwis battles ever â€" both for the great play and sportsmanship on display but also for the funds raised for those affected by Cyclone Larry.â€

Chief Executive of the NRL, David Gallop said that the opportunity for players to support an important cause was behind all of them strapping the boots back on.

“The generosity and support of all the players from both sides of the Tasman and all of the sponsors of the Legends of League charity appeal has been fantastic. Everyone involved is focused on delivering a great sporting spectacle to ensure we can raise as much money as possible.â€

Funds raised will go towards the Bundaberg Rum Bush Fund â€" an initiative between Landcare Australia and Bundaberg Rum. All monies raised will help communities regenerate land, waterways and agricultural properties in far north QLD.

“As the extent of damage has become clearer, we’ve been working with the Far North Queensland Natural Resource Management body and other stakeholders to determine the key priorities for the funds in the region,†said Brian Scarsbrick, CEO Landcare Australia Ltd.

“We congratulate all the individuals and corporations around Australia for their swift response to the call for funding, but we need more. Not only will this help to repair the damage to farms, rivers, forests and coasts, but it will continue a long-term shift towards a more sustainable, and cyclone-resilient landscape for the future†he said.

Larry was the biggest cyclone recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology to cross the Queensland coast leaving in its wake an estimated $1.5 billion worth of damages.

Landcare Australia will manage the distribution of funds to farmers, landholders and local community groups working to repair the devastation to land and waterways in far north Queensland. Projects may include:

i. Farmers repairing damaged land (eg. soil erosion)
ii. Projects working to clean up and repair waterways
iii. Native revegetation projects, including the creation of wildlife corridors

Several Australian companies including Channel Nine, QNP/News Limited, North Queensland Cowboys, National Tourism Alliance, QANTAS, Westpac, Toshiba, Leighton Holdings, Waratah Fencing and Holden have already pledged their support to the Legends of League Charity Appeal.

Bundaberg Rum is an Australian icon. Born out of the Queensland cane fields, Bundaberg Rum is a unique and widely recognised brand with a deep-rooted history.

Bearing the name of the town in which it’s made, this full bodied, rich and distinctive spirit was created when a consortium of local sugar millers first formed the Bundaberg Distilling Company in November 1888.
The brand is intertwined with Australia’s heritage. Bundaberg Rum is much more than just a spirit â€" it is a brand that represents all that is unique and great about Australia.

Landcare is a uniquely Australian partnership between the community, business and government to “do something practical†about protecting and repairing our environment.
This inspiring community network of more than 4000 volunteer landcare groups are caring for our waterways, revegetating our native bushland, protecting our coastlines and educating the broader community.
Landcare Australia Ltd is a not-for-profit organisation, set up to promote community awareness of the landcare movement and raise corporate funding for landcare projects.

I missed the NZ team listed on the Footy Show so any help would be appreciated.

League legends rally around

26mar06
TOWNSVILLE'S Dairy Farmers Stadium will host a Legends of League charity game between Australia and New Zealand next month to raise funds for the north Queensland communities devastated by Cyclone Larry.

Queensland coach and former Kangaroos captain Mal Meninga and former Test fullback Gary Belcher are confirmed starters for the Aussie team.

Sponsors Bundaberg Rum and Landcare Australia have teamed up with the NRL, the Cowboys and the Men of League organisation to get the game going for Monday, April 24.

The match will raise funds for the Bundy Rum Bush Fund that will help regenerate land, waterways and agricultural properties left in Larry's wake.

Plenty of money has already been raised in league circles to help out those left with nothing by Larry's run through the north.

Plus, the Cowboys took donations during last night's game against the Storm, while the Broncos will be passing the hat around again today at Suncorp Stadium.

But a trans-Tasman clash between the game's legends will certainly help the coffers, with a big crowd assured.

After all, sometimes these legends games can get a little serious.

Five years ago in an Origin legends game at Leichhardt Oval, Mark "Sparkles" McGaw inexplicably tried to put one on Big Mal's chin.

That's the incident (pictured) as captured by Fox Sports, taken about three frames before McGaw's head set sail for Row 3 of the Eastern Stand.

Maybe, for old time's sake, we can convince Greg "The Dish" Dowling and Kiwi Kevin Tamati to recreate their famous sideline stink from the 1985 Test at Lang Park.
