Gabba gets Twenty20
May 20, 2005

BRISBANE will host the first Twenty-20 cricket international on Australian soil when South Africa plays captain Ricky Ponting's world champions on January 9.

A capacity crowd of 42,000 is expected to pack the redeveloped Gabba for the clash, which is part of an exhausting summer schedule released by Cricket Australia (CA) today.

Coming off a gruelling Ashes campaign, Australia will start its home season with the much-anticipated Super Series against the Rest of the World side.

Melbourne's Telstra Dome will host the Super Series one-dayers on October 5, 7, and 9 before the six-day Test is played at the SCG starting on October 14.

Australia hosts a three-Test series against West Indies in Brisbane (November 3-7), Hobart (November 17-21) and Adelaide (November 25-29).

South Africa arrives for a three Test tour to be played in Perth (December 16-20), Melbourne (December 26-30) and Sydney (January 2-6).

Sri Lanka then arrives to play in the annual triangular one-day series with South Africa and host Australia starting on January 13.

Ponting's side will also journey to New Zealand in early December for a three-match one-day series for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, with those dates yet to be finalised.

In domestic cricket, a 20-over cricket competition is scheduled for January, to be played over a two-week period.

State teams will be divided into two pools of three, playing one match at home and one away.
