Aviva Premiership 16/17 - Round 3

At a rough guess I think most 10's should be taking 2-3 DG attempts per game. If you enter the oppenents 22 and fail to have a kick at goal (DG, Pen, Con) you've pretty much failed as a team. The SH and FH shoukd be able to recognise when an attack has petered out and to try to salvage some points. So I'll happlily argue it's a specialist skill at least one player in the pitch should be well versed in.

I think that's a restrictive approach, possession doesn't last forever but neither does opposition discipline. You can "know" when your chance has gone accurately. Plus there's a whole other load of factors at play.

Besides, 2-3 seems extraordinarily high anyway.

Wilko's DG stats will be skewed because he used to take DGs on penalty advantage, nowadays the fashion is to have a go at the shot to nothing, a cross kick or something.

Yep, but you also see quite a few snatched DG attempts too. Wilko quite often took an early pot to start the scoreboard ticking over.

Roughly back on topic, did anyone else think that the Saints defence seemed to chuck Billy around a bit in contact? Has he lost some weight?

(Regarding Billy) I thought that too. He's looking pretty lean (Comparatively). Not sure whether it's a good or bad thing. Obviously fitter, faster and a higher work rate is always good, but it sacrifices his ball carrying to an extent, which is what makes Binny Binny.

How often does a non existent attack lead to a penalty and how often does it end up with a turnover/knock on/a **** kick? I think it's not unrealistic a FH should be expected to have the DG as an option and it's of an arsenal of weapons they should employ.

Remember when one gets good at it someone always cries foul and they should have a reduction in points value.

I assume this is a typo...?

I agree with the root point about having a drop goal in the armoury, just quibbling over details here. Still maintain 2-3 per game is a) arbitrary and b) high.

Out of interest, what percentage accuracy do average/really good dropgoalers (whatever the word is) kick at? Are there stats out there I wonder?

True, but you can always balance him with quicker flankers to do the high work rate stuff. His point of difference is his heavy duty carrying and I'd be concerned if he was compromising that. Or maybe it's just that he's being worked out a bit. Will be interesting to see how others handle him.

If you're watching the Bath game, Olyy.... does the guy not sound even a bit Partridge-y to you?

I have just got round to watching the game tonight. Banahan makes a turnover, the commentator shouts out "Top of the Pops!" ... that's when I remembered this comment! Good observation!

It was really bad.

Meanwhile - Ahston has completed the foul play triumvirate.... gouging (that's what he was banned for, not necessarily how I'd describe it), biting and hair pulling.
