Caught me there as I've spent my life observing them. Which is actually why I go on this forum;)

Great insult. Not everyone is an idiot just a few. Who they are I will not say except osulli mi and the tadginator.

best scrummaging front row

Like all front rows i have a bit of a scrum fetish ans so i got to wondering what is the Best front row in the world to have come scrum time i think it would go something like this

1. Tonga'Hui
2.Stephen Moore/ Steve Thompson (yes i no he is old but he can still scrummage)
3.Martin Castro Giovani (i would say Nicholas Mas but having seen him get steam rolered by Tong'Hui im not so sure)

anyway Discuss

Does the hooker have a hugely important job in the scrum? (apart from hooking :D) because they never get praised around scrums only critsized.

Yes if a team deploy the French arrowhead technique. If Northampton had a hooker who could scrummage instead of one who just stood up they'd get pushover trys from they're 5m line. Also didn't I start an incredibly similar thread to this in one of my past lives.

1. Tonga'uiha
2. Servat (under the French system it's pretty much an extra prop)
3. Jones (if fit. If not Haymans or Ross in terms of scrummaging.)

Give it 10 yrs and I should be there. Oh yeah.

So, question for you front-rowers out there (or ay least those with small enough fingers to type). We need to get rid of the 'hit'. Its got nothing to do with scrummaging.....watched the '91 final agan on ESPN Classic. No dropped scrums cos they just packed down. So....my question....Tug o' War, Arm-wrestling....2 sports operating under Newton's 1st law just like the scrum. Why not start the engage by sayng "take the strain"-front rows bind together, then "scrum"-normal hostilities ensue? Rules out the hit, allows props to be props again.

The're nothing wrong with the hit, we need to reverse the pathetic crouch-pause-tough-pause-pause-pause-pause-pause-engage which cause the problems while educating the ref to look at the thing.

Crouch-Hold-Engage Problem solved.

Don't agree.... if the hit is ok, why do the (vast?) majority of scrums hit the deck on engage....cos one of the props has got the drop on his opposite number at the hit. Best to reduce the number of thngs a front row have to think about.

Because the've been there crouching and holding for half an eternity and/or gamesmanship has crept into the game as refs don't know who to tell a genuine fall from an illegal drop.

Thats a good point actually, they get to much time to think about it! Problem solved. Next? ;)

Might owe some NZ's an apology about O.Franks he's better than I thought, Woodcock cracked today Franks back was deadstraight almost all of the time, you've got a good one there.

Nicolas Mas was injured when France played against Tonga, he wasn't on the pitch...

There's no doubt he's the best prop of the tournament, and over the last 4 years he has easily been the best prop in the world.
