Hey guys just to give you a little background, im 6 ft 200 lbs (little over 14 stone) and im about to play rugby for the first time on my college team starting next month.

Anyway, im having a lot of issue with big toe pain, but not turf toe. Im using entry level $50 nike soccer cleats, and after every single practice my big toes are completely raw, and almost everytime i end up tearing calluses on the bottom of my toe. Its to the point where i cant even condition with friends after practice because i need to get off my feet. Worst part is, theystay raw for a few day which is o obviously gonna be a big problem once I have college rugby 5 days a week.

Anyone have any tips ?I never had this problem before but I'm wondering if it's low quality of the shoes. It's obviously related to all the friction from sidestepping and the sudden changes in direction. Do better shoes prevent this?

this happened to me towards the end of the season to me

it was all in the boots (cleats) the inside had worn away letting harder material (sole and more importantly where the stud connected) through the insideof the shoe. causing even running to practically destroy my big toe.

solutions only two that worked for me buy insoles to cushion the toe or buy new cleats

Yeah was gonna say decent insoles. It happened to me as I didnt have a spare set of studs or FG boots and was using big metal studs so they popped through the insole.. A nice padded insole (with enough room for your foot ofc xD) will solve the issue untill you can get hold of a new pair of boots tbh.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The only thing is that my boots aren't old, they're fairly new so there's no real wear-and-tear issue going on. Still, sounds like a good pair of insoles would be exactly what I need. I don't have a local rugby shop, but I'm assuming a local soccer shop would sell them.

One more thing: do more expensive boots have noticeable improvements in comfort and quality? or is it more than they're just getting "lighter and faster"? I'll be going from practicing 2x/week to 5x/week and I've got no problem buying top of the line boots, no matter the cost if it means comfort.

Meh, never really noticed that much difference in expensive boots. If you the insole trick still isn't doing the trick throw on a few extra pairs of socks. I usually have to do that during pre season.

Speaking of big toe injuries, I got stepped on during a run around on an indoor field run in February, it was mildly painful at the time but no big deal, a couple of days later my toenail turned black....and it's STILL like that 6 months later, it dosen't hurt or anything but I thought my normal toe was supposed to come back much earlier.

Yeah I dropped a barbell on my toe about two and a half months ago and was told since the nail was fully black it should fall off in three months.
