Exactly...how many of us own a HDTV? I don't. I won't for a while. Do I want one? Yeah! Can I afford one, or justify the expesne when I have a really nice unit at the moment. No.
So, you are spot on. When people own the HDTVs then they'll be asking for a compatible player. This is a few years off.

that is one reason why nintendo are waiting for more people to have them before they make a console that works on them. as you said the uptake of hdtvs etc is still really low so we will be waiting awhile yet before either format is truely mainstream anyway. in the meantime I think a lot of people will just stick with their current dvd setup.

Yes, I'm sure people are aware that they'll be expensive to start off with, however they like all other things will get cheaper and cheaper as time goes on and they become manufactured more by the original companies and then manufactured by new companies wanting to get in on the product.

It doesn't matter the price. People will buy them.

eg. In Australia petrol has been at an all time high for the past year or so but V8 car sales are at an all time high! Therefore if people want something, they'll get it!

These new discs hold so much that the retailers/manufacturers could justify a price 5-10 times that of the amount that DVDs originally were.

Everyone seems to be siding with blueray at the moment, it's going to be really hard to hddvd to come back. Especially companies like blockbuster going totally blueray - why would you now buy a hddvd player if you can't rent movies for it? Buying dvds in the uk is so expensive anyway, renting makes much more sense.

Besides - I want a ps3 so the choice is made for me ;-)

I think its terrible that we have to choose. That was the great thing about DVDs in that they were better than VHS and there was no danger of you getting caught out like all the people who bought a BetaMax player. Now its always gonna be in the back of your mind "what if I buy a HD-DVD player and in a couple of years they stop making them?" If rumour is to be believed the only reason VHS won out was because it was cheaper and the porn industry backed it. If this is so I'd go for whatever is cheaper out of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD just in case they have their way again.

for now, HD DVD seems to be better than bluray. The codec use is better, factory are cheaper (you could built 3 hddvd factory for 1 bluraydisc factory). Movie in hd format don't need more than 30 GB. If ps3 isn't a succes this christmas, i think Hd dvd will be the next "standard"

I think neither format will show a real sign of winning until well into next year.

By the way, none of us on the forum are planning to buy or make HD-DVD or Blu Ray factories just now. Although I am more than curious where the costings came from and the relevance as well. Last I heard company execs on both sides are lieing through their teeth.

Retail stores opting one or the other are going to review their policy

Paramount pictures have confirmed HD-DVD as such if blockbuster remain monopolized blue-ray â€" no paramount picture films will make their shelves..its a hole in blockbusters pocket if they remain 1 sided.

It happened here in Australia â€" Retail store JB-Hifi last year went BlueRay-Exclusive, then upon the news of Paramount Pictures, they have lifted this blue ray exclusive policy and will now start selling HD-DVD â€" ALL NEW FORMATS

I believe at the end of the day downloadable content will be the means, and no physical exchange of discs is the future….same with everything we have these days â€" TV shows, games etc will all be downloadable in about a decade to 20 years â€" the life of a disc is limited.

But of the 2 in the subject

Blue-Ray has higher capacity and quality
HD-DVD is region free, and cheaper

Both have their pros n cons……I’ll stick to DVD for a year or so before I make steps

Porn has the biggest hand in this debate with a doubt

Last i checked Porn went HD-DVD, not blue-ray - just yet though.

HD-DVD is cheaper........the porn industry is massive BUT, its broken down to soo many little entities, it would be more viable for these studios to choose HD-DVD.

Blu Ray Discs still are outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1 in the states and is winning almost completely in Japan like 90%+. Big factors in the whole thing too.

Lots of components to consider and events to unfold until there is an complete answer.

To the downloadable content argument I add an important factor. People love to collect and physically own things, thats going to take a long time to change.

Well im no expert but i think DVDs are outselling both by alot since there has been a big increase lately. It's still hard to say which format will win.

So it is reasonable to think that by the time consumers move on from DVD's on to superior products that another entirely different good could be out. Like how, in Australia at least, CD Players briefly were overtook by MiniDisks, which seemed to be the thing of the future and then MP3 players came out and blew them all out of the water....

I think that, like the PS3, by the time they gain enough ground on DVD's there will be better technology out there, I mean, VHS is even around in fairly large quantites despite DVD's being around for around a decade and being hugely better then the VHS....people won't take the new formats up too quickly...

Well, Blu Ray hasn't won the war yet, but they have dropped an atomic bomb on the HD-DVD camp.

Warner Bros are now doing Blu Ray exclusively. That brings the percentage of studios doing Blu Ray exclusively to about 65-70%. Yes, this does mean that the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy will be amongst many Blu Ray exclusives.

It's nearly all over. Next battle for Sony will be for the PS3 to shine in 2008.
