Christmas Carols: Your Favourites

What are your favourite Christmas Carols, and why? I'm not talking "Fairytale of New York" but proper traditional Christmas Carols, sung in Church and by groups of people in the streets.

I have to say one of the most amazing ones to me will always be "O Holy Night." It brings a tear to my eye everytime.
Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining,It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.Long lay the world in sin and error pining,Till He appear'd and the soul felt its worth.A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!Oh night divine, Oh night when Christ was born;Oh night divine, Oh night, Oh night Divine. Being Christian (devout) I'd have to say that the idea conveyed in redemption and the world feeling a sense of hope at His appearance strikes a solid note with me.

Also, I'm quite fond of "Good King Wenceslas." I don't know why, but it always makes me smile.

"Grandma got run over by a reindeer" is a classic... [/b]
That's not a Christmas Carol!
Surely there is an old, classic, proper song that you like to hear every year.

Lol, that song is ALWAYS on non-stop here round xmas time, hardly a carol I know, but it kicks ass. Other than that, don't really know heaps of carols. We just chuck in a CD and listen to them... they're all good and really get you in the mood.

Away in a Manger is a Carol. Last Christmas is not. O Come All Ye Faithful is a Carol. Step Into Christmas is not. Joy To the World is a Carol. Do They Know it's Christmas is not. Silent Night is a Carol. I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday is not.
See the difference? Sure they play the others non-stop on the radio, and I love them, but they aren't Christmas Carols. There has got to be one Christmas Carol that you like, right?

Hmmm, the fact my mum loves her Boney M christmas carol extravaganza and always has it on when I'm at home, some of them are kind of ruined for me.

On a serious note, O come All Ye Faithful would be mine.

Carols are a bit too festive to me.

Festivus for the rest-of-us I say.

However, this is my favourite Christmas song.

Silent Night. All the way. Although we don't get carolling anymore. Mostly because from October 25th onwards I only answer my door in the daylight hours, thus foiling the machinations of any people trick or treating, penny for the guying, or carolling.

It's a shame I couldn't get Jonah Lewie - Stop the Cavalry to qualify as a Christmas Carol....

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I don't know if Carol of The Bells fits in to this cateogry but I think its suitably haunting for a cold Xmas evening. Thats something I can only dream of though.

Unfortunately Nate, most of them have been over-commercialised to my liking. Which kinda ruins the meaning behind the vast majority of carols.

If I had to pick one, probably "Joy to the world", as it gets closest to the message of Christmas. Although even that one has been kinda killed by repetition as you enter any store in the world over this time.

Well, in America where Christmas is now "Holiday" we no longer get to hear the Carols that sing of anything of signifigance. It's a shame. I love Santa and Rudolph, but I'm sort of defensive about the meaning behind Christmas, and wish people wouldn't overly-secularize it to the point that it's no longer the birth of Christ, but just some materialistic orgy...

Once in Royal David's City
We three Kings of Orient Are
O' Little town of Bethlehem

I hate the f***ers. Only songs i like are pisstakes like Kevin Bloody Wilson christmas songs. :D

Oh Little Town of Bethlehem,
Away in a manger,
Ding-dong merrily on high.

(sort of) on this topic the BBC are doing a Liverpool Nativity this Sunday. A modern re-telling of the Christmas story using Liverpool's music. The easter one they did in Manchester was brilliant so hopefully this will be good too.

I'm not really into christmas carols but i like the samoan version of "O holy night". I don't know why i prefer the Samoan version (because my Samoan is bad) but when a church choir sings it always has a effect on me. Hard to describe how I feel really but it feels powerful idk.

Nate do you still get carol singers in America? [/b]
I think it depends where you live. I know they still exist, but I live just outside of the city on an acrege (sp). It's a dying breed, though. When I was younger my dad would always organize a group from the church to go to 'round to the elderly members of our congregations homes and to nursing homes to sing. That was always a lot of fun, IMO. Some churches hold "Carol Services" on Christmas Eve night, and I always make a habit to find one and attend (even if it's not my own) that night. Unfortunately all the songs with religious context are like a "no no" to do in public places here. Companies are scared to say Merry Christmas and stick to the "non-offensive" Happy Holidays. Even though it is Christmas, fewer people are saying it. So, in the malls you'll have small choirs (usually childrens groups, womens groups, ect) singing, but they tend to stick to the Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls sort of business. Those are fine, I love them...It just really burns me about Christmas no longer being PC. I should start a Carroling Revolution!

There she goes to save the daaaaaaay (I used to be Mighty Mouse)

Another christmas thread saved by the mighty powers of SuperGirl and her faithful Ladybug.
