Root aint the problem in this team. And neither is his batting. England are poor on all wickets, including slow ones and roads like this. Scored hundreds in awful England teams that lost in the spin friendly sub continent and in seam friendly UK grounds. Root's batting is not the problem at all...

I didn't say he was problem (in terms of batting, his captaincy is shocking). I'm just saying his batting gets overpraised, slight but subtle difference.

His captaincy is poor but he's suffered from the English 'Make your best player captain even if they have no credentials' syndrome.

Also been playing in a period where franchise cricket has taken over with the negative impact that can have on both individual performance and test cricket generally.

Captaincy often sends form down the drain so for him to still be averaging smack on 50 in tests is v creditable. Especially when the batting line up around him fails so often.

24 test tons include all the major test playing nations. 10 have been away from home and only 1 in a losing cause.

No batsman in history has even records against all opposition and different types of bowling. Some have much better first innings records etc and the context of the game always needs to be taken into account.

You can prove anything you like with stats but in the round Root's record bears comparison with pretty much any other English batsman.

Yeah my usualy complaint against Root is the nature of his innings, when they occur and all that other non-statistical stuff. He holds up to get in the conversation on the stats then were looking at do I think he's a better Batsman than some of our best ever players and I come on the side of no, as noted I think we've had three openers that are better batsman and I do think both Trott and Pietersen were better 3/4. Its just my way of saying he wouldn't make my all time England XI and he might struggle to make the 2nds.

With captaincy I've been saying for a while call up one of the county captains thats actually does it week in week out (the Somerset fan yells Abell but I'm sure there are others) instead of the England stuff. Part of Roots problem is he was such a good batsman is that he was bought into England so young he's barely played for Yorkshire since and hasn't learnt anything about being a leader.

Judging where players stand in the overall pantheon is just part of the fun. We disagree slightly now and everyone always becomes a much better player the moment they retire. I think that we can safely agree that most of the Eng teams he's played in would have been a lot worse without his runs.

Agree totally on the captaincy…..international arena is no place to do your basic training.

West Indies look like they've ruined this series with their pitch preparation. Two sides with batting issues scoring 400+. Two draws in a row on flat pitches. Waste of time coming over just to get batting practise.

TBF England need the practice.

In all seriousness these pitches are ruining this series. It's not even a contest

Getting similar issue in Pakistan as well.

At least Leech is proving why he's statistically the best English spinner over multiple seasons. Pitch offering nothing but he isn't leaking runs either.

Leach currently proving to be England's best batsman….

Comes to something when your no10 is the highest scorer and the best partnership is for the last wicket and more than double any other.

^ Leach and Mahmood already put on 80+ runs. Fair play to them both.
The pair of them have shown up the so called specialist batsmen this innings.

From the shambles of 90-8 we've got to 200-9.

Top scorers:

Mahmood (no11). 45

Leach (no10). 41

Lees (no1). 31. Not been in the team long enough to get the batting disease yet

Woakes (no8). 25

Extras 20

Overton (no9). 14

Specialist batsmen 2 - 7 managed 24 between them with a best score of 8.

Another pathetic collapse by England to lose embarrassingly. Also finding it ridiculous that they are getting praise for their batting in the first 2 test. Those pitches were so flat it was embarrassing getting out at all. Getting a score then should not be being praised highly or being used as a caveat for such a poor performance on a decent pitch.

Honestly the analysis of how England cricketers did in the series just annoys me.

Despite losing the last test embarrassingly 8 out of 13 players apparently are in credit with it being 5 out of 7 batters. Most of the credit comes from scoring runs on a pitch so flat it would make tap water look exciting. Honestly, it's irrelevant scoring runs on easy pitches with no pressure. It's the fact that England can't bat on difficult pitches or under pressure that's the issue.

Thought the exact same thing on this one I don't know how Lawrence has any credit in the slightest.

the only two better with credit after this farce were Bairstow and Root. And even then they were equally guilty for the last test match.

So Yorkshire are punished by not being allowed to host international cricket for 5 months, those months being November, December, January, February and March. Absolutely pathetic.

Graham Thorpe seriously ill in hospital with an uncertain prognosis. Only 52. Fingers crossed for him.

Absolutely mental listening to it at work. Gotta be up there with some of the ashes epics
