No... I think Mark Lawrence deserves it. He retired from international refereeing and he is our best referee together with Joubert.

Craig Joubert had both the Super15 and Currie Cup final last year already.

Just because someone deserves doesn't mean he'll get it... look at Bismarck... he deserves to be our no 1 hooker and first choice pick for the boks, yet...

Joubert is simply the best, all these finals mentioned, is example of that...

This is getting very exciting now... I will write a nice preview this weekend...

Just so you know, I'll be supporting the Sharks for this match... because I support any team that plays against the Lions...

Lions were very good in their win over Western Province, big hits, appropriate numbers at the breakdowns, big effort in the set-piece, incisive attacks and clever play in general. Much better than from the week before.

Glad that the Lions have managed a home final in I don't even know how many years, just disappointing that it is all gonna come crashing down when the Sharks visit them. Would have been nice to see if we could drive up to Jo'burg, damn finals now.

If we play as we did against the Cheetahs, we are going to be looking at relatively the same score-line from the last game of the league season, except for the opposite teams. How the Cheetahs never put at least 20 points passed that sorry lot in the first half, I will never know.

All aboard the Sharks bandwagon ;)
Welcome to the dark side!

Just looked in the CC champion betting thread, very nice odds on the Lions winning. Might put some vDosh down on it so I will have something positive if we lose.
So, Lambie to 10? That being said, Freddie is good every other game, so we can expect him to be ace this weekend.

But he got injured vs the cheetahs...

I actually don't really know who to support here, I dislike Gauteng and Johannesburg intensely, but I do want to see the Lions win it. Maybe they can carry over their success into the Super15 season...

mmm tough one...

Ah bugger it, go coastal, go sharks!

Mark Lawrence to referee Currie Cup Final
Article Published: Monday 24 October 2011

Mark Lawrence will referee his second Currie Cup Final when he takes charge of the match between the Golden Lions and The Sharks in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The 46-year-old Lawrence, who recently announced his retirement from international match officiating, refereed the Currie Cup Final in 2007 and the Super 14 Final in 2008.

"Mark has consistently been one of the best referees in South Africa, if not the world, and his appointment to the Currie Cup Final is just reward for his superb performances not only this season, but throughout his career.

Mark_Lawrence1.jpg

"The decision has not been easy as we are blessed with some very good referees who are capable of refereeing finals. The performances of Marius Jonker and Jaco Peyper in the semi-finals are testimony to this," said Andre Watson, General Manager of the South African Rugby Referees Association.

Lawrence will be assisted by Stefan Breytenbach and Christi du Preez as Assistant Referees, with Marius Jonker as Reserve Referee, while Johan Meuwesen has been appointed Television Match Official.

Quinton Immelman has been appointed the Referee for the Under-21 A Division Final between the Blue Bulls and the Sharks, with Rasta Rasivhenge and Cobus Wessels (ARs) and JC Fortuin (TMO) assisting.

In the Under-19 A Division Final, Rasta Rasivhenge has been appointed Referee, Tiaan Jonker and Reuben Rossouw are the Assistant Referees and Fortuin is the TMO.

The Currie Cup Final kicks off at 17:30 on Saturday.

There we go!!! First positive note about the final already. Mark Lawrence is the best referee in the world when it comes to communication. He knows the laws, is patient and takes the time to explain his decisions on the pitch. Earlier this year he announced his International retirement and this is a nice way of giving him the glory he deserves. I hope he will be reffing a lot of Super 15 matches still and hopefully the final (actually I hope not because that will mean the Sharks are not in it haha)

My preferred XV for the final:

4. Bresler
5. Hargreaves
6. Daniel
7. Deysel
8. Kankowski
9. Cronje
10.Lambie
11.Mvovo
12.Joubert
13.Jacobs
14.Pietersen
15.Ndungane

(Skipped the front row since it's obvious)

Likely XV to start:

4. Deysel
5. Skeate
6. Daniel
7. Alberts
8. Kankowski
9. Hoffmann
10.Potgieter
11.Pietersen
12.Joubert
13.Terblanche
14.Ndungane
15.Lambie

This with Michalak out of course. I don't see them bringing on Prinsloo

Potgeiter was unlucky not to make the squad for the semi, the difference in the last game against the Lions when he came on for Joubert was immense.

Anyway, to me it looked like Michalak just had a bit of a dead leg, certainly didn't seem to serious and haven't seen anything on the website about him being ruled out yet.

I think we will see relatively the same side against the Lions, however Hargreaves may come into the 22 if fit, but between Botes and Coetzee I can't see who will go out, the most apparent choice would be Botes, but I think we can all agree that Plum attaches a lot of sentimental value to his players, and can't see somone who just earned his 100th cap being ditched and cast out of the comp final.

2011 Currie Cup final, Transvaal - Natal

While the World Cup was working towards its climax with the final between the All Blacks and Les Bleus, in South Africa, people are now focused on something else. The rainbow-nation has enjoyed the annual Currie Cup season with 8 teams in the Premier Division trying to become the new national champions.

When the teams started back in July, all eyes were focussed on the Western Province and Natal Sharks. The 2 teams played the final last year and proved to be the 2 best teams the country has to offer when both made the Super Rugby play-offs (as the Stormers and the Sharks).

The Sharks started at home against the Blue Bulls while the Western Province hosted Griquas, the only small franchise to deliver quality players every year. It was proven when Griquas managed to sneak in a late equalising penalty by Monty Dumond to grab 2 points with a 26-26 draw.

The Sharks went all out at Kings Park, winning 35-16 against their big rivals including 4 tries. The thing is, back then, nobody considered the Lions as serious contenders. They nearly lost to the Pumas but managed to win 31-27 at home.

But then came the international season. The Springboks had already played 4 matches into the Tri Nations and suddenly the Lions changed from outsiders to serious contenders. Their highlight of the season came at Loftus. Early in August, they managed to beat their arch-rivals in their own backyard 27-36.

The Lions had their best day at Loftus as well. A month later, 3 September, the Durban-team travelled to Pretoria and managed an even better result, winning 27-39. Weird thing was that the Blue Bulls scored 4 tries while the Sharks only got to 3. The Lions have been a sleeping giant recently and they have the quality to do great things. For years have they been the laughing stock of Southern Hemisphere club-rugby. The Lions franchise lost all matches in 2010 and under John Mitchell they got back to their feet, only losing by small margins against the 2010 finalists Bulls and Stormers before beating the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. It was the start of something great. The Lions managed to beat the Brumbies and Highlanders on their Tasman-tour. They ended up 14th just ahead of the Rebels on the log at the end of the season.

In the Currie Cup, things looked different. For some reason, John Mitchell got things back on track and it could be the the turning-point in Lions-history. They managed to beat the Bulls at Loftus, losing by 2 points at Newlands and ending tied-up 25-25 in Bloemfontein. The only match they lost by a serious margin visiting a top team, was last week. It was the last match of the regular season and Mitchell decided to rest most of their players. The Sharks took advantage of this, winning 53-9 and clinching 2nd place. They have their top players back now, with Jantjies, Killian, van der Merwe, Maku, Cilliers and Minnie likely to start in the final.

Now the question is, who will win it? In the rich history of the Currie Cup, the Sharks have won the trophy 6 times already and the Golden Lions got to 9. The last time the 2 teams played each other in the final was 1999 in Durban, where the Sharks lost at home. This marked the last time the Lions won the trophy, which ended in a massacare as the Transvaal province strolled to a 32-9 victory. This was the start of a very disappointing era in the Sharks history where they lost 4 Currie Cup finals in 5 years and a Super12 final in 2001 against the Brumbies.

After the dark days, things changed in Durban. Dick Muir took over and talented guys like Francois Steyn, Ryan Kankowski, Ruan Pienaar, Brad Barritt, Bismarck du Plessis, Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel and JP Pietersen showed up to form a classy alliance together with the older guys like Bob Skinstad, Percy Montgomery, Albert van den Berg, AJ Venter and Johan Ackermann. 2007 was the most successful year in the Durban-based Super Rugby-franchise. Ending top of the log, everybody expected them to win, but they lost in the final thanks to a controversial try by Bryan Habana and a missed penalty by Francois Steyn.

2008 was the year when the successes started again. The Currie Cup was won in the final against the Blue Bulls, the perfect revenge for the undeserved loss a year earlier. In the Currie Cup season of 2008, the Sharks ended top of the log, Keegan Daniel was the top try-scorer and the Lions travelled to Durban for the semi-final. The Sharks won 29-14 and as mentioned, they went on to win the final.

In 2009, the Sharks (top of the log again) lost in the play-offs while the Lions didn't even make it, ending 6th even behind Griquas. In 2010, the 2nd time the Sharks won in the last couple of years, the Golden Lions once again missed the play-offs and the Sharks went on to beat the Western Province 30-10, with 25 points scored by Patrick Lambie.

This year is different as the Lions haven't just made the final, they do so after topping the log, thus giving them a final at home. However, can they beat the Sharks at Ellis Park? They did in the regular season, but finals in Jo'burg are not a certainty for victory. Only in 1950 and 1971 have the Lions (Transvaal back then) managed to win Currie Cup finals at home. In 1992 and 1996 the Lions hosted the Sharks for the final and both times the Sharks managed to win the trophy.

In 1993 and 1999, it was exactly the other way around. The Lions travelled to Durban for the final and both times they won! 21-15 in 1993 and 32-9 in 1999 (as mentioned before). Will this mean the Sharks will win next Saturday? I certainly hope so. You guys know I am a huge Sharks fan and despite wanting to write a objective preview, I cannot help myself from being a little bit Sharks-focused.

Another interesting statistic reveals that the last time the Sharks won the cup as holders (that is, recorded back-to-back final wins) was against the Lions, in Johannesburg, in 1996. The previous year, the Sharks won in the final at Kings Park, against Western Province. This year's Sharks stand to repeat history, having themselves won the Cup against Province in Durban in 2010.

I have to admit the Lions have been doing remarkable in this years Currie Cup and I expect them to win their first Currie Cup final at home since 1971. It's been 40 years while the Sharks last won a Currie Cup 'on the road' 15 years ago. Who will it be? There are some personal successes to be achieved as well. Both teams have a player contesting the top try-scorer position with Michael Killian (9) and Jacques Botes (8). Only Bjorn Basson managed to score more tries (10). When it comes to points, both teams also have a player contending. Frederic Michalak is topping the points list with 181 points (3 tries, 32 conversions, 31 penalties and 3 dropgoals) with Elton Jantjies in 2nd place with 164 (0 tries, 28 conversions, 35 penalties and 1 dropgoal).

With all my hope for a Sharks victory, I have to be realistic and I am going with a Lions win. Transvaal by 6.

I decided to put it here as well... Enjoy!

I love this.

A LONG TIME AGO, IN A STADIUM FAR, FAR AWAY…

It started, like all good rugby matches, with a braai. But for Shark Lionchaser the act of grilling meat over open coals was more than a spot of pre-game socialising, it was a ritual over which he reverently presided, taking fastidious care over the preparation of the food he was about to share with his closest friends.

But this time the surroundings were unnerving. Instead of the wide open spaces of his home in Nabrud, a balmy metropolis on the seemingly endless and inviting depths of the Deep Ocean, Shark found himself surrounded by the asphyxiating concrete jungle that was Egrubby, the business capital of Saffrika. It was a far from condusive compromise to the green fields of Nabrud's Emperor's Field stadium, but the sausage roasting slowly on the open coals before him smelt just as appetising, nonetheless.

Away to his left soared the cement ramparts of Rubbish Cooldrink stadium. History reverberated around its precariously tiered heights – this was where Saffrika had beaten the Dangerous Dark Ones all those years before. And was where his team, The Great Whites, today took on their own nemesis – the Tarnished Tabbies.

It had not been a great season for the Whites, he mused as he lovingly turned the sausage now grilling to perfection in its own juices. But the return of his hero Tap Repus from duty with the Saffrika All Stars, together with seven other national heroes, had bolstered the GWs enough to see them grind the Tabbies into the ground in the last round of the Hotgrub Cup, the final of which was to be played out this very day.

The Whites were reigning Hotgrub champions. The Tabbies a rags-to-riches turnaround of a dysfunctional group of boys into a team of hungry warriors intent on ending the Whites' rule… And in a couple of short hours, the two sides would do battle to prove their supremacy. It was going to be war with an oval-shaped ball. And Repus was going to be pivotal… Shark could feel it in the core of his being. Even though he'd been usurped in his absence by the foreigner, Froth Froggle, a former international superstar from Gaulstone.

Suddenly, the smell of the nearly cooked sausage seemed to fade into insignificance, and the towering blocks of concrete around him seemed to lengthen as a voice began to echo in his ears… "Shark… Let go of your feelings, the power of the Boot surrounds and penetrates you, trust your instincts and the future will be revealed."

He blacked out then, coming around minutes later surrounded by his concerned companions. Heart pumping, head thumping and sausage now sizzling, Shark turned his head towards Rubbish Cooldrink stadium and whispered "I have to speak to Tap Repus before the game. The outcome depends on it…"

Away in the Great Whites' locker room deep in the belly of Rubbish Cooldrink stadium, Tap Repus took a deep breath and uttered a quiet prayer to Saint Percy, the High Priest of the Order of the Boot and Kicker General for Saffrika. It was Percy who had identified him as a youngster, along with his coach, Odi Tum Seplummtriee, a Wonky who came from the far distant Land of the Long White Fog where it rains for 364 days a year.

Seplummtriee and Percy were convinced that Tap was conceived by Mini de Loreans because the Boot was strong with him, stronger than any other apprentice they had overseen. But Tap was not so sure. The Gaulstonean Froth Froggle wore his flyhalf shirt and Seplummtriee had positioned him at fullback for this match, in spite of his performance in the semi-final when he had stepped into Froggle's shoes after he was injured in the first half. Why? If he truly had the Power of the Boot and was the most powerful Booter of them all, born of the Boot, by the Boot for the Boot, why was Froggle still at No 10?

This was the question rolling around Tap's mind when his keen senses picked up the faint but distinctive scent of braaied sausage and a significant disturbance in the Boot as a huge fracas erupted at the door to the locker room…

As Shark Lionchaser forced his way past 14 security guards, three Tabbies reserves and Seplummtriee's assistant coaches Graaff Bustforth and Huge Head-Forwards time seemed to slow to a standstill. He locked eyes with Tap Repus who moved towards him now and everything froze but the two of them as the Boot held them in a temporeal maelstrom.

"You have the key to winning this match…" The words came from Shark but he did not speak them. They emanated from him, rather, flowing across the Boot to the now calm and serene Repus, who was joined with him in a Boot mind-meet. "Froggle will pull a hammy before the first minute is up and you will carry the mantle of the Boot. You must empty your mind and surrender to the Boot. It will guide you."

"Who are you?" Repus asked, his mouth not moving as the words reverberated in Shark's ears. "I am…. Your…. Second cousin twice removed on your mother's side…" The truth spilled out of Shark without him realising the weight of the words. Repus had never known who his second cousin twice removed on this mother's side was – it had been kept from him since he was a babe in arms lest the truth of it be used against him by the Dark Masters of the Boot and their evil henchman Daft Mornay Stain. Stain's apprentice, Beltum Tramcheese, would be kicking for the Tabbies in under an hour…

"NOOOOOO! It can't BEEEEE… THEY TOLD ME YOU WERE DEAD…." wailed Repus as time slowly began to reverse, taking Shark back out of the locker room door as he stretched out a hand to his young but distant cousin… "Listen to the Boot, Tap, it is your ally… I am here for you, always…"

Nog 2 slaapies!!! Kan nie wag nie!

Man, I am excited about this. I can feel we are going to have a tough game but we will pull through in the end. The experience of playing finals will be the deciding factor. The Lions only have van Heerden, James, van der Linde, Maku and that's it! That's the most experience they will be able to use. We have players who played Rugby World Cups, Super 15 play offs, have won 2 Currie Cups, toured to Europe and it is not just a couple... We have Jannie, Bismarck, Mtawarira, Alberts, Deysel, Kankowski, Skeate, Lambie, Ndungane, Terblanche, Joubert, Mvovo, Pietersen, Michalak, Jacobs, Botes...

We are going to win this!

Ek moet my Afrikaans vir my finaale eksamen oefen. Dis die perfek plek vir dit. :D
